My Sister's Swollen Foot

My sister has a swollen foot, but the whole thing isn't swollen....it is just the top of it.  Her toes and ankles are fine.  It is very defined to just that area.  She doesnt want to go to the DR because they will probably tell her not to run, and being her, that won't happen.  So she doesn't get it checked.  There is no pain, and the swelling has remained the same for a long time now.  Never gets swollen more that the top.  She's had it for a long time and I'm worried it is something more than just a swollen foot.  Any comments welcome.  Thanks.

Melissa.

Dear M,

HI SWEETHEART!  I am almost finished unpacking all the rest of my boxes and well our house is turning into our home sweet home yeah!!!!

May I please ask you.....Is it the top of both of your sisters feet?  If it is I M O only it could be the way she ties her sneakers..if it is only one foot she might tie that one with more strength than the other one..

and...if she just has swelling on the "TOPS" and no where else...is swelling in anyother parts of her body???Tell her to be 100%honest with you.....then she can be retaining water....I HAVE SEEN THIS WITH MY OWN EYES!

Tommy's grandma was put on water pills as a result of swelling on tops of both feet....not on toes just like u described...

HI!

It;s only the top of one foot that is swollen.  It's been going on for about a year now.  No swelling on any other part of her body.  She is being 100% honest with me..the swelling is just there.  Hasn't fallen etc, it just came out of no where. Nothing fell on it even.  Glad to hear you hose is becoming a home!

I would tell her to get it checked! Swelling could indicated a problem with her lymph system. Not to scare you or anything but my cousin had something similar in her hand. It was just the top of her hand. The fingers where fine as was the palm. When she went in finally after like a month of putting up with it, the doctors recognized it as what it was, as sign of a brain tumor. My cousin had a non-malignant brain tumor. She had to have brain surgery at Mayo to have it removed, but we all thanked god that she was lucky and it wasn't cancerous on top of it. So she had it removed and lost hearing in one ear but she is fine now. I would tell your sister to go in because it could be a sign of something much worse!

Thanks Brianna...I'm trying to get her to go still to the doctor, but she won't.  She's afraid they will tell her to stop jogging/running.  I think the only way for her to go is if something actually happened more serious and she had to go to the doctor because it interfered with her life.  I really hope that dosnt happen.  Thanks for the information.

She just wont go because there is no pain there.  I couldnt change her mind even telling her all this!

I have the exact same problem! The top of my left foot has been swollen for over two years. When it started out, the whole foot was swollen for about a month, and it was very painful to walk. It felt like the skin was ripping. That had happened to me on and off for about 7 years, but it always went away. I'd gone to a doctor when it first started happening, but she couldn't figure out what was causing it. In July of 2009 my foot became incredibly swollen again, and the swelling died down but never completely went away. Now, just the top of my left foot (the area just below my toes) is swollen. I went to the doctor a year ago, but he just blew me off when he couldn't figure out what it was after asking me a few basic questions (like whether or not I'd injured it - no, I hadn't). The swelling started a couple days after flying internationally, but I don't think that's related. I didn't fly very far (it was just from Mexico to the U.S.). I would LOVE to know what's causing this, and I hope it's nothing serious.

MARIACHA ..... my sister got it re-checked and come to find out she had an egg-sized tumor in her groin area, that had been pressing on a vein and artery for over a year.  They finally diagnose it after a battery of tests when she moved out of state (her arm was becoming tingly also).  She was put on Coumadin for awhile because they though she had a blood clot, but come to find o ut it was a tumor and just had it removed a few weeks ago.  It was serious in her case, so IMO you should get it checked again.

Thank you for the advice, Melissa! I am glad to hear that your sister's tumor was caught in time and that she's ok. Now I will definitely make a point of going to a different doctor and getting it checked again.

I have the exact same thing happening to me right now. It started in January and at first

It was painful to walk, then the pain went away and now the top of my left foot is constantly swollen. I have only been able to wear flip flops and very loose shoes since January. I have had x-rays done, a CT scan done, a Doppler study done, and today I went to a rheumatologist who just kinda blew me off and said its probably sarcoidosis--WHAT?!? Please help if any of you have any further information on this.

sammyreynolds

I have the same problem and I'm going to see a Podiatrist Tuesday. Shemia it sounds like they are ruled out DVT (deep vein thrombosis) but I would be asking to check and see if there a potential for Lymphedema.

Shemia78

Hi Sammyreynolds,

I have also seen a podiatrist and his exact words were "well I know that it's NOT trauma, but I don't know what it IS" :-/

SHEMIA ... I wrote this on your profile page but not sure you got it:

My sister also had MRIs.  Idk which test confirmed the problem or even which of her DRs found the problem, but it was a specialty DR, and they said she had a tumor between 2 veins the size of an egg that had to be removed (they also removed a lymph node).  It was a spindle cell tumor, but fortunately not cancererous.  IMO I would see a DR to get your foot checked, and if one says there is nothing wrong, then find another DR.  My sister had to do that, because the first DR didn't see the tumor (A BAD DR).  Fortunately she got a 2nd opinion because they found something.  I also wrote a blog on spindle cell tumors.  Good luck ... just keep finding a DR until they find something because IMO just a swollen top of the foot is not normal.

If the DR doesnt know what it is/is from, keep trying different DRs until there is a reason for it.  IMO it is not normal, and was not normal in my sister's case.

Sheia go see a vascular surgeon. They can both check for Lymphedema and vascular problems. Have you had a MRI? That would rule out a a tumor.

sammyreynolds

Melissa you are 100% correct. Swelling on top of the foot is not normal. It could be a sign of anything from vascular problems, lymphedema to like your sister a tumor. Like you said if one doctor says it's nothing get a second opinion or more if needed.

sammyreynolds

I should also state that I also do have swelling in the are of the heel as well. I think I know it is all signs point to either CVI, DVT or some sort of infection.

sammyreynolds

Went to the Podiatrist. Apparently on my heel I had developed a pressure sore and didn't know it. It was infected. He prescribed me some cream and gave me an antibotic for Cipro. We'll see how it goes.

melissaw72

sammyreynolds ... I am not a DR and dont want to scare you, but have read of and heard MANY people who have taken cipro and how it has affected their life even after taking it?  Has your DR told you anything about it?  Like I said,  I don't want to scare you, just make you aware of it's side effects and possible long-lasting effects.  If you google it you will find a lot of information and all on cipro.

Here is a link to Cipro:  http://www.askapatient.com/viewrating.asp?drug=19537

Hope this helps.

Melissa.

sammyreynolds

It's not my first Cipro rodeo. The problem is alot of doctors over prescribe it and even give for things that's it's not intended to treat. I've never had side effects from and like I said I've taken it for different things like UTI's and such for over 20 years when needed. I think side effects in people are because not every one can take certain meds. Like I said I'm aware of the side effects and no when to stop taking it.

melissaw72

I'm glad to hear that!

Just curious if there was a result of the swollen left foot. I have the same thing. Mine has been this way for over 6 years now. It does swell more in the summer time. I had numerous test done including X-ray, cat scan and even an ultra sound to check for a chronic blood clot. It's more annoying than anything because I can only wear certain shoes. Just looking for some answers.
