Has anyone tried Lactulose for the constipation of IBS? IF so, has it worked? How long did it take to work?
What about Amitiza for the same reason?
I am currently on the Amitiza and wanted to know how long it took to work, etc. and it's effectiveness.
Thanks, Melissa.

I do have IBS but i don't get constipated. I do get mostly diarrhea. no i haven't tried it.
Yes I have used Lactolouse and it helped me in a couple of days, I don,t take it like I should so I still suffer because I don,t eat proper either and my IBS is constipated and diarrhea so when Iam really constipated it does work for me, the other one you mentioned I have not heard of
Thank you janicemarie51....that helps me a lot. I may need to go on it for insurance purposes and wasnt sure how well it worked.
Melissa.
Found out insuranse covers lactulose first so I have tried it and it does work somewhat. I will try it for awhile but causes a lot of gas. If anyone has info on lactulose who have taken i t on a long-term basis please comment or email me at

Thank you,

Amitiza was a great for me. If I could afford it I would be on it now. If it doesn't work for you, I was also on Levbid aka Levsin aka Hyoscyamine [which was least expensive of all, since generic, and least side effects and really helped with cramping]. Levbid comes in two forms: long acting and fast, dissolving. I had both, with the fast, dissolving to take after meals if my stomach was upset. That was something that Amitiza didn't offer I'd wished for, so I ended up asking for the dissolving tabs as an adjunct for the Amitiza anyway ;) You might want to consider. Good luck! xoxoxo
ps: Very best thing in the world was keeping a food journal - every last thing that went in my mouth I kept a record of for months, along with how my stomach was feeling. Turned out I was lactose intolerant as well as have sensitivities to corn, wheat, and a few other foods - some that make me double over as soon as I'd ingest them. Think I'd figure that out after 40 years, right? ;)
tlgf1968....Thank you for the ideas. I'm currently on Amitiza (prior auth for it so insurance covers it) and it takes most of the gas away that I was having and the bloating. So far it has been working out well. I don't keep a food journal because I am trying to lose some weight and when I write down what I eat, it (for whatever reason)--I tend to get too focused on it and the weight doesnt come off. I know I'm not lactose intolerant--I used to be, but YES it can reverse itself back to normal. Got rid of all laxatives, took the lactaid pills in the meantime, and for me it did reverse and I've been fine for years now. Not sure of exact thing that did it, but it happened because I am fine now.
Melissa.
Melissa, realized that I didn't answer your question as far as how long the Amitiza took to work, which is about 2-3 weeks, which is how slow my system is. After that, I was fairly "regular" as far as I was concerned :)
Something that may open eyes for others in your life ..... butyoudontlooksick.com ..... the best explanation of "our" kind of fatigue I've come across to date. Hope it is as helpful for you as it was for me :)

Hi Tracey, Amitiza gets rid of the excess gas, but does not keep me regular. Don't remember how long it took to work..been on it about a year. A lot of people say it does keep you regular, but for me it doesnt. When I had asked about the amitiza was because I didn't know if anyone out there had been on it and their experience on it. I saw the website, and wanted to let people know IBS is something that is a problem, but by looking at someone you wouldn't know there was a problem. Thanks for commenting :)
