Surgeon 3/22/10

I have had 3 hip surgeries in the past 2-3 years, trying to save the bone but there wasn't enough blood flow to it and the result was a hip replacement, more serious than the norm because of all the scar tissue from the first 2 surgeries.  (I was walking and my hip broke from a stress fracture--no falls or anything).  I was in physical therapy for a couple months, finished that last July, and have been improving ever since.  However over the past 2 or so months my hip started getting worse and I got it checked, x-rayed (all normal), come to find out it was bursitis (previous blog).  I'm questioning whether this is really bursitis because there is such specific pain on the side of my hip.

I am still unable to walk up stairs past couple months because of the wincing pain it causes.  The bursitis, if that is what it is, isn't acting up right now, I mean it is still hurting but I can deal with it (I am walking ok, but any mis-step or twist sets off the bad pain).  So I called the surgeon and he saild to come in to see him on March 22.  Anyone have any idea why I started not being able to go up stairs and for so long now?  I didn't think the bursitis could cause this much pain for something so specific.  Any feedback?

Thanks,

Melissa.

My bone density -- I have osteopenia in my left hip.  Not sure in the hip that broke (right one) but can only assume it does too.  I walk up the stairs off and on, I mean not a lot fortunately but enough to make this pain a nuisance and in the way.  I should be back to normal by now (surgery was last April) but I seem to be going downhill.  I was told part is muscular because my hip can rotate; but when there is the slightest pressure on the muscle in certain ways, it really bothers me.  However that may not be all of it because if it was all muscular it would be sore from the stair climbing, where this pain pierces in the side of my butt, only when I lift my leg slightly off the ground or put pressure on it like to go up stairs.  They are 2 different types of pain.  I have never heard of the meds you mentioned.  I'm waiting also to see if a cortisone shot will solve things.

My bursitis usually lasts about 3 weeks, just when I thik I can't take it anymore, it does get better. My mobility becomes limited (and I have not been what through what you have) while I can walk up and down stairs it really hurts!!
