Conditioned Insomnia

I've been told I might have conditioned insomnia, where it happened during a point of my life of about 5 years where I was having hallucinations and delusional, not on meds, and was waking up every 1-2 hours because I thought I was controlling the world and had to keep updated so I became accustomed over this time and now it is ?permanent?

I was wondering if anyone has heard of this, or has it, if so how do you sleep a full night again, and what to do to help it.  Does it ever go away?

I saw my neurologist last Monday and the sleep psychologist doesn't take my insurance so my neurologist is having me do a self-help thing ... I'll try it, it is a 6 week thing and I am desperate to sleep, but was wondering if there were any other ways to handle this.  Thanks,

Melissa.

Melissa,

Most insomnia if not related to another health problem is conditioned.  It is not permanent, it took a while to condition yourself to be the way you are, so it would take a while to condition yourself to sleep a normal pattern, or reset your circadian rhythm.  Basically and it's not easy, you would need to strictly adhere to good sleep hygiene.  It will be hell for a while, and you will feel worse, but it would reset your sleep/wake cycle.  Also light therapy would also be helpful.  It is possible to fix, but you have to be very disciplined.  The other thing is, all of that is true if and only if you have no other sleep disorders.  Medications and health problems can also cause insomnia.

It seems that if you have conditioned insomnia, you could uncondition it.  I have insomnia (can't turn the brain off sometimes) and take a simple and very inexpensive herbal remedy called Insomnia Relief from Puritan's Pride vitamins.  Don't know if they really work or if it's the placebo effect but, either way, they help me sleep.
