Hi all.. As many of you know I will be having hip surgery on the 28th of April, and am wondering in the meantime , what can I do for exercise that will not involve my hip (both hips for this matter) so I can avoid gaining weight in the next week+ and after surgery; I will be very sedentary, and becasue it isn't the usual hip replacement surgery, it willl take a longer time than usual to recover, possibly up to a year before all my strength is back as long as i do physical therapy (without PT it will take longer). I will be looking into water therapy, but will be unable to do that for 2-3 weeks after surgery until the wound starts to really heal. And that is if insurance covers it. I was thinking of maybe upper body workout but if anyone knows of other suggestions to keep me from gaining weight I'd appreciate the input. Thank you.
Melissa.

Hi, Just a quick note. Strength training is what you need to do. My husband just had a total knee done and that was what the doctor said that all knee and hips should do ahead of time, if they don't come in as an accident. Check with your PT for a schedule of exercise.
Thanks you. I won't have a PT until rehab, so I don't have any PT's to ask before the surgery. I might try a few things I was thinking of, but even sitting down it hurts to lift things--anything more then 4-5 pounds. I guess I am pretty limited. I'll keep thinking...thanks for the advice. After rehab I will know what to do better. I just didn't want to lose muscle before surgery, or become weaker becaause it will be that much harder to recover. But I can do it.

Making sure your range of motion (ROM) is good, don't know why you are having the hip so this may be part of your issue.
Water walking is wonderful and builds up the muscle. Can you find yourself a pool to even start doing this in? I had my left leg 'rebuilt' in 1988. What we know as FMS and the laxcicity in the muscles--hypermobility is the term--my tendons and legiments had to be shortened, my patella was always dislocating. The first time I was 10. The last time was 1988! 6 times between the 2 knees. So they decided to shorten up and they opened the leg from mid thigh to mid shin, cut, skrewed back into the bone the things that needed to be, turned the patella and stapled me shut. I did not do much till 6 months down the road. WHICH I SHOULD HAVE. It was almost a year before I found the aerobics class at the local pool. I had a repeat in 1997, but with orthoscopic done--4 cuts, 7 stitches, back in the pool in 2 weeks. Much different rehab for sure. I do my own at the pool--Dr knew and helped me set it up. I figured with PT at $100-1.50 per 30 minutes, I COULD DO THIS. Before the first surgery, I hit the pool swimming agressively right up till surgery. That helped alot.
Hope this gives insite.
Hi, After 2 surgeries on my right hip, the surgeons have concluded that the bones wont heal due to lack of blood supply to the area. I will be getting a hip replacement, unlike the usual hip replacement. I don't know anyone with this type of one done, so it is hard to know what to expect. Aside from that, I am looking into water therapy, but am realizing that my schedule this week and next (28th is surgery--Tuesday) is filled up with other appts etc to get taken care of before the big day. I would ideally love to do somehing on the weekend before surgery, when is my really only time I will have. I am looking around for a pool to walk in but it seems the times are filled with other people. i am in no doubt cdoing water therapy after surgery, rehab, aand the few week restriction to swimming I will have. Thanks for you inout.
Melissa.
Keep us posted on your sugery and recovery. I will say a prayer for you. Joyce
Thank you Pinkers...I hope people do too; I might even start a new blog when i can get to the site because i will know my limitations better then.

Hi,
Hope this helps, I have issues with my knee and am careful not to overdo it seeing I spend most of my day chasing a 4 year old around. I am 48...I think what I do is genious...I bought a recumbant indoor bike. I have a table beside it. It is totally silent Runs on magnets...I read, I do activities with my son and I hang out on the computer. I honestly forget I am moving my legs when I am on it....I bought it on sale for $100.00 (was $200.) canadian at christmas and have put 2,744 km on it since Christmas. I also do light arm weight while sitting watching my favorite show.
If you were interested I would check with your Doctor and hopefully you could pedal away....I don't feel I have to have high tension to get results....just moving your legs is great.
Good Luck
Well you must be recovering from the surgery if I'm correct you said April 28th.
I will said keeping your eating on the low processed food and keep H2O regular to help kidneys fush away toxines from recovery and drugs, upper body activity can be helpful only as streching and activate circulation. Drs. direction when to start can be different but a bit of mild mobility and positive mind will get you out of the recovery with great results.
