Mammograms

Hi...I have my first mammogram on Friday (I'm 36) because I am such high risk of breast cancer, given family history (my mom filled me on this one today).  I didn't even have to wait a month for an appt.  I've heard it's painful, but quick, but wondered if anyone had advice on minimizing the pain and getting through one.

Hi Melissa,

Why not try taking Tylenol about 30 mins before your procedure? Might help.

Best wishes,

I find if you take a couple of tylenol or aleve just before you leave the house  it helps.

Just relax. It's over in less than 10 minutes.

Good luck.

Just had one myself - and the most helpful thing I can say is don't go when you're pms and your breasts are tender.  And don't be fearful - it's to help you, not harm you.  Believe the best.

To a great report!

I am a "DD" cup size & no one warned me before my first mammogram.  I went when I had extreme tenderness due to PMS.  You do not ever want to do that.   Also, if you tend to retain fluid and are not on a diuretic, the day before & of your mammogram it might help if you drink a lot of fluids such as lemon water, eat some natural diuretic foods etc.  This will minimize any discomfort, but I really don't find the test to be very painful at all.  It really doesn't take long, no lasting tenderness or pain and wonderful peace of mind.  My grandmother, mother, uncle and younger sister have all had breast cancer so mammograms have been a part of my life since I turned 30.  Get it done & then you can relax.  Oh yeah, mother & sister both found their lumps during self examinations.  Don't forget those.  Good Luck!!

Thank you Barb for your information and encouragement (everyone's).  This blog is helping me alot (the whole thing).  Shouldn't be too bad I am getting from what people say.

Melissa,I have only had one done before and I thought it was painful, but it's something that has to be done. It's a pinching feeling.Maybe it was for me because my breasts are small. You better check to see if you can take advil with your meds.,because it's ibuprofen.Just a suggestion.

Thank you Yvonne.  I take tylenol and advil all the time, and both are ok with my meds.  I'm going to take some rapid release tylenol 1/2 hour before I go I think.  Actually for me advil would be safer, so maybe i'll take some of that.  Thanks for the idea.

Hi, I've had quite a few, everyone told me it was painful, but I did not think it was painful at all. A little pressure but that's it. It didn't take long either. Tammy

UPDATE ON MAMMOGRAM

It wasnt bad and i even forgot to take the advil beforehand.  Thing is they want  me to come back, and said by next wed (April 1) I should be getting a call to come back and they'd do another one,  and wait there while the films were read.  Then I'd get results.  Is this normal?

Any time my mammograms have shown anything questionable I was immediately given a sonigram of the breast.  May be your doctors do things differently or that there was no one on staff to do further testing.  I am sorry to say, the only time you get called back is if something questionable is noticed.  You mentioned you have had lumps removed before & this is most likely another benign cyst, but has to be checked further for safetys sake.  With the family history I have, I have had 3 lumps removed & one aspirated...all benign.  Don't jump to the conclusion that this is the worst.  Your doctors are being thorough and that is what you want.   One of my sisters (I have 5) had a large lump show on mammogram, was called back in 10 days & it was completely gone.  Have you been diagnosed with fibrocystic breast disease?  It may be difficult, but try not to dwell on this completely.  I will add you to my prayer list and watch for follow-ups here.  God bless you Melissa! My email is in my profile if you'd like to talk that way also.

When I get a Mammogram, the place that I go to looks at the mammogram then sends it to my doctor, maybe they want you to come back just to check again, I know people have told me that sometimes it depends how big or small you are, how dense your breasts are, cos sometimes they can't see it all, try not to jump to conclusions, Tammy

Hi Denise,

Thanks for responding--I have and have not been diagnosed with fibrocystic breast disease.  One doctor said I had it, then when I had to change doctors I brought it up and i was told I didnt.  But it has been brought up and is not an unfamiliar word.  Maybe even the surgeon brought it up.  It was 8 years ago I had the lumps removed.  I'm not real worried about it, just never had heard of someone getting a phone call by mid next week or before and most likely was what she said, I'd need another one done.  So, I will keep you up to date.  My email is also on my profile as  melissaw72@verizon.net  .

Thanks again,

Melissa.

I'm just wondering one way or the other--not really thinking the worst.
