Sleep

Anyone have sleep issues--I cant seem to sleep a full night....I'm up every 2 hours like clockwork.  It may be the meds that I am on but you'd think you'd sleep for a year on a days worth.  The insurance co cut one med down and now wont cover it which did NOT help the situation.  The temp one just clogs my head more and works temp, but not like the other one did.  Not sure if sleep issues focus around meds or something I am unaware of.  Have been tested for sleep apnea---dont have it.  An alll night sleep study that was fine--no seizure activity.  Anyway, just asking.

I just did a test, my sister didn't tell me she was doing it so that I couldn't be giving incorrect data.  I was starting to wake up at around 3am every morning and was wide awake, bright eyed and bushy tailed for about an hour and a half.... where I got a lot of books read :-)  I started monitoring when this happened as it didn't happen every night.  I found out it was after I had had coffee after about 6pm.  Well, each night I had coffee, I was up.  I switched to decafinated tea and I didn't wake up any more until about a week ago.  I was up again for two nights in a row and I thought, oh no here we go again.  I complained to my sister and she said she would never have believed it.  As she had made the tea for both those nights AND she had switched mine to one containing CAFFEINE.

So to make a long story even longer.... and a question I could have asked without giving you a play by play... Do you drink beverages containing caffeine later at night before sleeping?

Cheerios,

Thanks for reading my blog--I dont drink coffee, so that is ruled out.  I rarely eat chocolate either which contains caffeine also.  I do drink tea but only usually in the AM.  It's herbal tea too which contains no caffeine (I just checked the boxes) either.  It's just that I am awake every 2 hours for some reason and anywhere I wont be interrupted (?)--ie, i was typing an email to a friend and I fell asleep not even knowing it, and suddenly I woke up 2 hours later in the computer chair.  Even with the time change it was an hour but with setting the time ahead it turned out to be 2 hours.  Almost like i am afraid to sleep so I wake up so mauch (if that makes sense).  I know I am afraid to sleep initially but once I do I get used to it.  But I dread going to bed sometimes because something just doesnt seem right (even though nothing is wrong that I can figure out) and I just wont lay down.  Maybe I wake up out of fear???  It's all a mystery to me right now. I see the neurologist in 2 weeks and I will brign it up then.  I even take meds to sleep in larger than normal doses and still, 2 hours.  I mean not every night, but eventually I have to force myself to sleep initially.  I've been prescribed meds also like ambien  and even those meds dont work for me--I just wake up groggy  every time i wake up.

PS --sleeping to me is like a job that I cant do or am afraid to do, that I worry over--I try it but no success, and find myself awake at 4 or 5 AM regardles of amt of sleep I get.  And I always say ''good it's over and done with" (meaning the sleep).  That's the best analogy I can give.

It would be a good idea to cut out beverages with caffein after 1 p.m If that doesn't work, cut them out altogether. Do you know many sodas have caffein in them? If you don't drink caffeinated beverages, you may need a sleep test evaluation. They may be able to help you. Good luck.

I have had a sleep test for sleep apnea and seizure activity and my patterns of sleep.  overall the sleep study turned out normal for them--the thing is I couldnt gt up and walka round when I was doing the study becasue I was hooked to eeg leads on my head and heart monitors. All the neurologist suggests is yoga.  Now, I have nothing against yoga but he hasnt gotten it hrough his head that yoga is not  a cure all fore verything.  I do exercise in the AM on a daily basis now that I am able to and i don't drink soda, unless I am at a restaurant I order a diet coke (which isnot often).  I will look up the sleep tech person that was referred to .  Thanks :)

Get a second opinion on your sleep study...yes, have it redone with a different nuerologist. Make sure that the nuerologist specializes in sleep disorders, not all nuero disorders. From the time I was 14 on, I had sleep issues. EDS being the worst and able to sleep normally being secondary to that. I saw drs in MS, OK, and WI. One nuero diagnosed me with CFS/FMS, and ruled out stuff, but never done a sleep study. A few yrs after instantly falling asleep driving (abt 9a.m.), I crossed oncoming traffic lane and a sidewalk and right into the back of a minivan. There were no cars or peds walking! The wreck was scary enough, but the fact that I was not tired until seconds before I fell asleep was worse. It had been 13 yrs this was going on with elivation in the issue. A yr later, to the point that I would sleep for as much as 36 hrs straight! Still having dozens of drs say, Some people need more sleep than others; It is just what your body needs; it is all in your head; You should be over this phase soon. I got so tired of being tired! I got online to look up sleep centers of America, clicked on my state, then started calling each of them until I got a person, not a message. Told them I had a study before, said no sleep apnea. When they found out that I was falling asleep while standing up, was put on hold. A few minutes later, came back with an appt a few days later. The drs schedule was rearranged, just to get me in, he was booked out over a month! Went in, he scheduled an 18 hr sleep study, w/o prep time! Went back for results to find out the original one, they stoped looking because I don't snore. It gets better, I have 5 sleeping disorders. Sleep apnea (stop breathing 9.7 times/hr), severe narcolepsy, hypoxemia, and one to do with my REM (I stay in it and never hit other stages)! The first 2 lead to the second 2 and all lead to EDS! So they immediatly started me on meds and C-pap. After 14 yrs of not knowing, that 2nd opinion paid off!

My neuro actually is a sleep disorder specialist and reads all results himself so no mix-ups (or whatever his reasoning is).  I see him in about 2 week or so and will ask again / tell him again about the sleep situation.  Hopefully he'll order another one (study).  The problem is I have gone through 8 other neuros before seeing the one I have now (due to insruance coverage changes, misdiagnoses, etc), who takes my insurance, is a sleep specilaist, medical acupuncturist and neurologist.  There aren't any more in the area who take my insurance---I cant drive because of neuro reasons, and I dont travel well.  I also dont have the money to travel (I'm on disability).  I scrape by as it is, and regarding traveling to other places i would do that but when I am in big spaces/places I get all confused (hard to explain) unless I am with someone.  Even in Boston (I live 25 minutes from Boston and can hardly go near it--unfortunately my orthopedic surgeon is at MGH, although he is the top chief there and excellent, but someone takes me and is always with me or nearby).  If new neuros come to the area I will loook into them but yes, i am going to ask for another sleep study done.  If he refuses i will go from there.  Not sure which direction, but I will deal with it if it happens.  Thanks for the advice.
