I have had a terrible cold/possible edge of the flu for about a week now, and although things "seem" to be getting better, they aren't really.
Anyone have any home remedies that you have if/when you get sick? I'm all out of things here and there that I know of. I am even on extra Flonase (nasal spray) and double the QVAR inhaler dose so I can breathe ok.
Thanks in advance.
Melissa.

I just got a cold! I knew I should have knocked on wood (or my head) when I was writing my previous thing about not getting sick!
A couple days ago I felt a scratchy throat forming...I started gargling with warm to hot salt water (figure out how hot you like it) 3 or 4 times a day.
Last night my nose was running like crazy, kept waking up and getting grossed out...washed my sheets in hot water just a while ago.
Now I'm feeling a tickle in my throat and I burst into dry coughing spells. It's not a home remedy, but I got Delsym cough suppressant which has worked for me in the past. So far, no dry cough spells.
A home remedy cough suppressant I may try from Dr. Oz show yesterday. Apple cider vinegar, cayenne pepper, and honey...not sure about the amounts...but after you mix together, take 2 teaspoons as needed.
Be careful of the rebound effect from the nasal spray...I think it can shrink your nasal passage if used too long? Meaning that you'll keep needing it. I like my Vicks inhaler that I've had for years now, it's probably expired but it still works! Maybe check out the ingredients. If it's different than Flonase, maybe you can rotate them so you're not overdoing either of them.
How about eucalyptus oil in really hot water (just boiled), and put a towel over your head to breath in the vapors?
Try Sambucol liquid syrup. It's elderberry extract. Lots of studies says it works. My husband takes it. I got a cold and he didn't. I've been taking zinc lozenges every 3 hours. I want this gone, like, yesterday!!!!!!
Thanks for your tips; I appreciate them :)
(The nasal spray is prescription and my DR increased the dose. It isn't something like Afrin that you'd get in the store).
Thanks again. I'm off to bed.

I've just found 3 recipes/remedies you can try to beat the cold: lemon juice or cinnamon tea or another recipe that I'm about to share with you.
For lemon juice: Drink freshly squeezed lemon juice of 1 lemon in a glass of lukewarm water every 2 hours. You can further increase the effectiveness by adding by 1 tbsp of lemon vinegar to the beverage twice a day. If taste is too sour, add honey.
For cinnamon tea: Pour boiling water into the cup of 1.5 teaspoon of cinnamon powder. Add honey and squeezed lemon if you like.
Blend 1 apple (exclude the seeds and a stem), 2 kiwi (uncovered), 1 tbsp of honey, 1 cup of water: blend (until smooth) all together and serve. Try this recipe after eating breakfast.
It will be good idea to try warm (little bit hotter than usual) bath for 10~20 minutes.
One extra tea (peppermint tea): Pour boiling water to 1/2 cup of peppermint leaf. Let it sit for 5 minutes and add 2~3 tbsp of honey.
Pretty simple, isn't it? Try it. (Don't forget the Lemon-Ginger Tea)
Thanks again for the tips. When I am up to doing so I will try and make the tea. Blender broke the other day, so I need to get a new one or have the one I have fixed.

if you have a sore thoart never drink anything acidic it will burn your throat like hell stick to mild to blan stuff cinnamon and lemon aint the choice
My cold is now in my chest. Painful coughs like a knife in the chest and throat...they come every couple hours, but when they come, it's painful. So I'm now taking Delsym, zinc lozenges, vitamin C, oranges every day, homeopathic remedies for post nasal drip and bronchial coughs, I tried that Dr. Oz remedy...I like it, I like the slight burn and I like the way the honey coats my throat. I also restocked up on Vitamin D, which i haven't been taking....
What is the Dr. Oz remedy?

From the web address above, it has pretty much of what I've wrote inside of this blog.
I've found what "GreenFish" is talking about:
http://www.drozfans.com/dr-ozs-home-remedies/dr-oz-capsaicin-spray-natural-cough-syrup-recipe-pineapple-tea/
All Natural Cure For Coughing: homemade-syrup
-1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
-1Tbsp honey
- ¼ tsp ground ginger
-¼ tsp cayenne pepper
-Mix in 2 Tbsp water.
Gargle and then swallow.
I can tell that "ilovemyboyz1281" doesn't like "strong tasting" stuff. hhh. But guess what? it works. Lemon is high in Vitamin C, cinnamon for its warming qualities may help to ward off colds and improve the circulatory system (causes sweating) which helps us to overcome flu, colds, and fevers. I didn't suffer cold last winter season because of ginger tea. And yes, I've made that tea again with lemon with a spoon of honey and I love it.
I hope all the bloggers in here to try what I've posted because I know that it will work. By the way, I'm not sick anymore!!! I hope you all to recover soon.
Thanks for finding that! Fortunately I am in the home stretch of feeling better. Lots of congestion, but overall so much better. I really appreciate all the remedies!

Thanks for posting the Dr. Oz "recipe" lgtwins...the one they showed last week just had the ACV, honey, and cayenne pepper, and it was presented by experts at Harvard...I was out of commission for the past few days, the weekend was the worst, but now I'm over the hump too, my whole terrible cold is hopefully behind me...KNOCK ON WOOD, anything can happen and things can go downhill any moment, I just have to be vigilant in proper diet, good night's sleep, drinking lots of water, and washing my hands all the time!
BTW, I will print out the recipes/remedies--they look very good to try...but hopefully I won't have to try for a very long time (although cinnamon and lemons are antiviral/antibacterial and should be included often in the diet) The last time I got a cold was 3 years ago. Let's hope for 3+ years or never again!
