Thinning Hair/Losing Hair

Why do people lose hair?  Any stories out there that might help others?

I lose my hair when my thyroid is "off", when TSH is high.  But STRESS over a week (from personal experience) will make my hair fall out ... which effects my hair more than anything.  I know it is stress because it has happened more than once.  When I get home from where I was, got TSH done and it was fine. My food intake etc didn't change.  I was careful with brushing it too much.  etc.  The ONE thing that changed though was my stress level.  After about a week home my hair started getting thicker.  It happens every time I go away. Has anyone had this kind of hair thinning/falling out/loss related to stress? It doesnt happen after one day; it all adds up.

I eat protein rich foods, some of all of the foods mentioned on TV, with vitamin C that  absorbs a lot of things.  Any suggestions from anyone who's hair just falls out under stressful circumstances that last more than a few days?  What should I NOT do, to prevent it from falling out.  Today's show was talking about something about going to the hairdresser (missed that part) and how that can effect your hair, but I dont get my hair done; it is straight, so I dont worry about going there.

M- They were saying that too much heat on the hair (dryer, styling tools, etc.) causes it to become weak, so they suggested using a barrier cream prior to using heat implements.  They also suggested that people switch the part in their hair every so often, as well as backcomb the hair to give it more volume.

Dr. Lisa stated that, as we age, the hair growth process slows down, and then the change in hormone levels causes thinning and loss.  She and Travis also said that thinning and loss can be caused by: pregnancy, smoking, stress, poor nutrition, thyroid problems, and chemo. treatments.

It sounds as if you heard the info. re: nutrition/food: eat foods containing vitamins A, B, and C; iron; zinc; protein; Omega 3's (healthy fats).

Hope that helps to fill you in on some of the parts of the show that you missed!  Stress is certainly a factor with this problem.  Dr. Lisa said that people going through a divorce can experience hair loss, so I would imagine that other very stressful events (death, worry, anxiety, etc.) could cause this problem as well.

* Of course I meant experiencing the death of someone else; not one's own death!  Wasn't sure if that was clear!

Thanks lucy ... yeah, I understood what you meant about death :)

hi,, a week after child birth a clump  of my hair fell out......maybe hormonal changes or perhaps the anesthetic ? I have also known of people whose dark hair turned silver grey overnight !   they say from a shock.  ie, a  .personal loss/death of a loved one etc   /   or  from  a 'terrible fright' can do it......so one may guess that  emotions DO play a part in hair follicles  behavior.  like u said stress..  caused hair loss..    .idea>> maybe your doctor can prescribe.... like zoloft...so u keep relaxed..   to   help ur stress levels ??    maybe.  or try yoga to relax....

Hi lola, thanks for the advice.  I am already on many medications, 2 of which are ant-anxiety, and some are sedating.  I think it might be being away from home for awhile (for me at least).  The anxiety of being away from home is really overwhelming.  I think I will ask my psychiatrist for an increase in the anxiety meds; hopefully he'll do it!

Hi, Melissa...

My hair has been falling out for over a year but my doctor said it was because he stopped my hormones, and it would eventually stop falling out.

So far, it still comes out but not as bad.  I'll be glad when it stops as I am getting older and can't lose much more!

Hope you find an answer soon.

Hi everyone...year 1998 i was examined i had hormonal embalance  pregnant for my 2nd child he's 13 years old now, i thought abnormal hormones won't have a child..My health problems became worst later when i was diagnosed last May 2009 that i had a sub serous multiple myoma, but no medications given to me from my doctors for this illness...

After couple of months another problem occured because i was diagnosed for another disease...a GRAVE disease, which until today i only take TAPDIN 20 mg once a day for my toxic goiter. After taking this pills i had encountered skin problems,my pimple won't disappear until now, i never had pimples before and i had hemorrhoids for over 3 years now.,and i keep experiencing falling hair up to present. i felt always hungry before i am regular body size but not today my waist line is 34 inches already so shocking. I see my doctor every 3 months and keep complaining for this matters i felt i look very ugly now and as usual he keeps on ordering me to have another blood tests, TSH,T3,T4 but nothing changes to his medications. So i stopped seeing him.In short i did not go to other endo near in my place until today.

Please whoever knows my illness, please please help me. This health problems i had now cost my job ,i am not confident to what i look now so i resigned after 7 long years.Do i still have hopes for a better me? does this kinds of illness i had now still cureable? I don't know what to how to fix myself back like before.
