Hi everyone, my name is Mandee...Im new to the site! I felt really compelled to come check it out after seeing this story. Im 27 years old and Ive had a problem with sleep walking for about 10 years. Ive also had a problem with extreme daytime sleepiness for about 12 years, along with other symptoms that have all worsened with time. I was diagnosed with narcolepsy in March of this year. In my sleep I can carry on a full 15 - 20 min. conversation, go outside and smoke a cigarette, and eat. All while appearing to be fully awake, and usually with no recollection the next day. Luckily I have a very high metabolism, Im 5'5" and weigh only 111 lbs. I eat alllll the time, but Im always hungry! And everyone does think its so weird that I eat in my sleep...I guess it is kinda funny, when I wake up and see remnants of what I had been eating so I start to try and figure out what else I may have done...which have been some pretty crazy things! My daytime sleepiness started by sleeping thru most of high school, and most recently was the cause of me napping at my job everyday for 4 yrs. It would become uncontrollable and I would just have to give in and take a nap, lasting anywhere froom 15 mins. to an hour or so. Well in September of this year I switched jobs, after about 2 months my new job required me to go pick up items from a supplier which was about a 45 min. drive on the highway. (Keep in mind this is only about 4 hours after waking from 8 hours of sleep.) From the first trip I knew it wasnt going to be easy, because by halfway I was starting to get sleepy. It slowly got worse over a 2 week span, to where I was dozing but would wake as i started to ride the line of the next lane. The next week it got extremely worse, you probably dont want to hear all of this, much less the details of my too close encounters...but I will say, that I truly believe my grandmother as an angel, was resting on my shoulder looking after me. I honestly dont know how I did not hurt myself or someone else... in 3 days I had about a dozen instances that I woke up with literally only split seconds to avoid serious accidents. Thats when I decided it was time to get help and that something really wasnt right. After several tests and a misdiagnosis of sleep apnea, I was diagnosed with narcolepsy. Finally the sleepwalking and everything else made sense! I took one medication with no improvement for about 3 months, then they switched me to Xyrem, which if you google it you will surely have the same reaction I did...I was somewhat skeptical, but I gave it a try and have been on it about a month now. It definitely knocks me out, so Im not sleep walking, eating, or talking anymore. I do still have daytime sleepiness so they doubled my dosage the other day...we'll have to see how it goes :) Sorry for the rambling..is there somewhere else that I should have posted this?? i look forward to chatting with you all, seems youre a nice bunch & unfortunately this is only one of my medical problems so i have lots to talk about :)

Mandee I was so excited ( I guess thats what you would call it...) to see people that have the same crazzzzy issues that I have as far as sleep eating goes. Many a mornings I will wake up with fudge rounds in the bed and pudding cups and spoons. I dont find that I stand in the kitcken and eat this stuff. I always wonder back to the bed. The other day found a candy bar on the floor that I did not eat all of. It's just crazy and can be embarrassing and i thought for sure I was the only one who does this. My husband thinks it cute but I hate it. I am just glad to know that this really is a condition and I am not just some fat over eater who eats at night as an excuse. Now if I could just go after the carrots...............
Ok trying this for a second time. I am glad I dont sleep walk and eat. I would weigh twice what I weigh now. I would like to sleep exercise though.
Mandee,
I am a Registered Sleep Tech, and I find your story very upsetting. Where did you have your sleep study? It's pretty hard to misdiagnose someone with Sleep Apnea. If in fact a sleep lab gave you a misdaignosis, they should be shut down. Your condition doesn't sound a whole lot like narcolepsy. If you really have sleep apnea it would explain the problems you are having too, extreme fatigue, needing to take a nap, falling asleep while driving, and parasomnias including sleep eating and sleep walking or talking, and if you do have another sleep disorder, until that is adequately treated a diagnosis of narcolepsy can not be made. It is much more common due to prescriptions, or another sleep disorder to be misdiagnosed with narcolepsy, then with sleep apnea. Was your MSLT done in the same lab that misdiagnosed your apnea? I speak at national sleep conferences and if this is really happening something needs to be done, because reading a sleep study for sleep apnea should be obvious to the Recording Tech, the Scoring Technologist, and the Diplomate of Sleep Medicine. It would be very hard for sleep apnea to be seen when it's not there by all of these personel. If your diagnosis is wrong sleep apnea vs. Narcolepsy, it could mean major health problems down the road, and take years off of your life.
On a personal note, I sleep walk, sleep talk, slep eat (occasionally), and have sleep sex, since I started taking Ambien. The Sleep walking and talking I've done since a child, the others are new. This is not uncommon with Ambien. All of these disorders occure in Slow Wave Sleep (deep sleep) which we have a lot of as children and less and less of as we get older. So these disorders a lot of times improve with age.
Thanks, Michele

mandee...Can you give an update? I want to know how the zyrem double dose worked for you. My daughter's doctor prescribed zyrem recently and so far it seems to be working great!! Did you ever get anything to work for you?
I too have excessive daytime sleepiness. My symptoms started way back in elementary school and my teacher would send home comments to my parents that I was just plain lazy. It wasn't until I was working as a police officer in 2006 when I noticed something was wrong. I started to fall asleep in the middle of my shift in the cruiser! I would pull over in a dark spot and snooze for 15 minutes to 1/2 hour. Mind you, I worked the swing shift 6pm-2am and I thought it was just my body trying to get used to the shift. But, on my days off, I would feel as if I didn't sleep at all after an 8 hour night sleep. I went to a neurologist and he advised me that I had insomnia and gave me some caffeine pills. I didn't like the way they made me feel, so I relied on 5 hour energy drinks, until I got immune to them. In 2007, I got to the point where I became a liability with my symptoms and decided to retire. In 2009 I met with my 4th neuro and he put me through all kinds of testing, especially one for epilepsy. I seeme to have a problem with carrying on with conversations and memory. He put me on depakote and did another eeg which showed a little spikeage. After that, I went for a sleep study and it showed my oxygen levels were extremely low and was put on a CPAP machine. I have been using the machine for 3 months and don't see a difference. My doctor thinks I have narcolepsy but needs more evidence. I can totally understand what you're going through an I empathize. Narcolepsy, insomnia and even epilepsy takes so much out of a daily life. I am now considered disabled due to the fact that I NEED sleep at least 3 times a day!! Best of luck to you and let me know how you are doing.
I also have excessive daytime sleepiness and went for a sleep study. The first one showed sleep hypopnia, where the O2 levels a re low. The next time I went I tried a CPAP machine to see if that helped. It has extended my night time sleep, but I am still exhausted during the day and need naps through out the day. My neurologist thinks I have Narcolepsy but isn't 100%. I have memory loss and daytime foginess all the time. It is really hard to go about daily living like this.
