3. Get Tested
E.R. physician Dr. Travis Stork says that, to stay healthy and live as long as possible, you must arm yourself with information about your health.

Your Biological Age

A new test may predict your life expectancy. Would you want to know?

Christine, 52, says diabetes and high blood pressure run in her family, and she wants to know how high her risk is for developing the ailments.

“My biggest fear is that I’ll develop high blood pressure and have a heart attack,” Christine says. “It scares me, because I don’t want to leave that way.”

Christine undergoes the vertical auto profile (VAP) test to provide an individualized picture of her heart disease and diabetes risks. The VAP test identifies hidden cholesterol issues that can increase the risk of heart disease or diabetes, even if your routine cholesterol test results are normal. See Christine’s results.

Family physician Dr. Michael Cobble advises people with a strong family history of high cholesterol to be tested annually, starting very early in life.

4. Take a “Playcation”
Recent studies show that people who are stressed have increased blood levels of a dangerous chemical called interleukin-6. Interleukin-6 has been linked to heart disease, osteoporosis, type-2 diabetes and certain cancers.

“Stress also renders the immune system less effective because it causes an inflammatory response in the body,” Dr. Travis says. “It limits your ability to fight infection, heal wounds and ultimately increases your risk of diseases.”

To lower the stress in their lives, many people take vacations, staycations or daycations, but what about a playcation? It’s the newest way to de-stress!

Pediatrician Dr. Jim Sears takes a playcation at Dig This, America’s first heavy equipment playground for adults, where you can re-live your days playing in the sandbox. Watch Dr. Sears de-stress by tapping into his inner-kid!

“A playcation can add years to your life, improve your sleep, lower stress hormones and lower your blood pressure,” Dr. Sears says.

“That’s the key because, to make playcations work, you have to focus to the point where you can’t think of anything else [going on in your life],” doctor of psychology Wendy Walsh, Ph.D. adds.

5. Pay it Sideways
Research indicates a strong link between volunteering and good mental and physical health. While we often associate helping others with positive activities such as working in a soup kitchen or handing out food at shelters, there’s a new way to give back that you can do anywhere, anytime: Pay it sideways!

The concept’s goal is to improve your own health by offering help to those in your immediate surroundings.

“Co-workers, friends, people who you interact with all the time,” Dr. Wendy says. “Those are the people you can lend a helping hand to.”

Author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad and Midas Touch, Robert Kiyosaki, discusses paying it sideways in a professional environment, and the importance of lifting up your co-workers and employees by helping them succeed, too.

“It’s not how much money we make, but the number of jobs we create,” Robert says. “Great wealth, happiness and health [is obtained] by being generous.”

6. Get Busy in Bed

It’s been proven to help your immune system and your entire body – sex!

Research shows that people with active sex lives may have increased immunity against certain illnesses.

OB/GYN Dr. Lisa Masteron says that besides boosting your immunity, having sex burns calories, improves intimacy and reduces pain by releasing endorphins. For men, it can reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

7. “Vegify” Your Life!
“When it comes to adding healthy years to your life, what you put into your body is more important than you think,” Dr. Travis says.

“Research shows that eating at least one cup of raw veggies per day can add up to two years to your life by lowering your risk of colon and breast cancer, and all those antioxidants can repair damage in your body,” he adds.

Certified nutritionist Cynthia Pasquella shares three delicious recipes to vegify your life. Get the recipes!

Dr. Travis explains that a combination of protein, carbohydrates and good fats is essential to a healthy diet and demonstrates how each is absorbed by the body.

8. Eat More Essential Fatty Acids
Getting enough essential fatty acids in your diet can reduce your risk of heart disease, depression, stroke and even early death.

“One gram a day keeps the doctor away,” Dr. Sears says.

Good fats include fish, nuts and olive oil. Cynthia explains how you can incorporate the proper amount of essential fatty acids into your diet.

9. Take Years Off Your Bottom
Tori, 52, says that, while she’s in great shape for her age, her behind isn’t as perky as it used to be. Health and wellness expert Jillian Michaels shows Tori and Dr. Travis three simple, tush-toning workouts!

10. Fall in Love
People in long-term relationships or marriages are more likely to live to a ripe old age than their single counterparts. What’s the key to making love last? Francine and Gerry, married for 53 years, share their secrets.
