Contact Lens Update
Erin, 23, joined The Doctors in October 2013 to share how a common contact lens mistake may have cost her her vision. When she was eight months pregnant, Erin stored her contacts in tap water, as she was out of contact lens solution at the time. When her eyes became irritated and excruciatingly painful, she visited her doctor, who diagnosed her with a potentially blinding infection. An amoeba from the tap water had attached itself to her eye and begun attacking her cornea. In constant pain and losing her vision rapidly, Erin was scared that she’d never be able to see her baby.

“I’d have to sit in our bathroom with the door shut because any light in the apartment would just give me shooting pain,” she says. “I couldn’t handle being around anything. I couldn’t read, I couldn’t watch television, I couldn’t do anything for such a long time.”

Now, Erin along with her new daughter, Madison, join the show to describe the painstaking treatment she’s been undergoing for months to help restore her vision.

Erin’s doctor, ophthalmologist and corneal transplant specialist Dr. Ronald Gaster emphasizes the importance of proper contact lens care. “We have to all remember that we can’t wash our contacts in water. We can’t store them in water. We can’t clean them in our mouth … absolutely not,” he says.
