Is Your Nose
Making You Fat?

Plastic surgeon Dr. Andrew Ordon explains how a compromised nasal cavity can affect your weight. Plus, watch as E.R. physician Dr. Travis Stork takes a blind taste test to show how the sense of smell impacts your tastebuds.

Health Intervention
Connie and Frank are a loving couple who love to eat. From snack-time bagels to late-night bowls of sugary cereal, this couple’s poor eating habits have really taken a toll on their health. Despite undergoing gastric bypass surgery four years ago, Connie continues to gain weight due to her poor eating habits. While they both have quit smoking, they say that they’ve replaced one bad habit for another and feel that they are addicted to sugar. They join The Doctors to face their bad habits and get tips to curb their cravings and drop their excess weight.

To help Connie and Frank on their path to a healthier lifestyle, The Doctors asked them to keep a record of everything they ate for an entire week, and then they display it all onstage. Facing their tables full of poor food choices, the couple says that they are committed to making a change, but are fearful of giving up their favorite indulgences.

Physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist Dr. Ian Smith tells the couple that he can help them lose 20 pounds in just four weeks with his Super Shred Diet. Describing it as a “healthy crash diet,” Dr. Ian explains that his diet focuses on calorie disruption and negative energy balance to train your stomach to accept less food at each sitting. He says the couple’s biggest issue seems to be portion control and that by controlling the volume of food that they eat, they can make a big difference in their weight loss battle.

Dr. Ian explains the Super Shred Diet

"Three things a diet should be: It should be simple, it should not be expensive ... and lastly, it should be straightforward," Dr. Ian says. Armed with a copy of Dr. Ian’s book, Super Shred: The Big Results Diet, Connie and Frank say they are ready to change their eating habits and start losing weight today.

Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way
Brad, 26, used to ride snow machines every day, enjoying the thrill of the speed and being outdoors. But in February 2012, his life changed irrevocablyWhile riding a snowmachine, Brad broke his back after jumping off a 100-foot cliff. Though he landed smoothly, the snow wasn’t as deep as he’d thought it was, and the force of the landing caused his T-12 vertebrae to explode, sending bone fragments flying into his spinal cord and severing it. He has been paralyzed from the waist down ever since.

Not content to live the rest of his life in a wheelchair, Brad spent a year teaching himself to walk again with the help of leg braces. He joins The Doctors to share his inspiring story of will and determination.

"Determination is everything," explains Dennis Christensen, Brad's certified prosthetist and orthotist. "This is the thing with Bradley," he adds. "He looked at me and said, 'This is what I want to do.' I made him a set of braces that I thought he might be able to use, and then I had to ... make a stronger pair, because he was pushing through the first pair I made him."

Brad says that he feels encouraged by inspiring others. "I really hope that I can encourage more people to get up and do it. I feel like it's a new beginning," he says.

Robin McGraw’s The ASPIRE Initiative
Every nine seconds, a woman is assaulted or beaten in the U.S. In fact, domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women — more than muggings, car accidents and rapes combined. Robin McGraw, founder of When Georgia Smiled: The Robin McGraw Revelation Foundation, has made it her life’s mission to help empower women and stand up for anyone who is being abused or neglected. She joins The Doctors to introduce The ASPIRE Initiative, a free domestic violence education curriculum to reduce the level of intimate relationship violence in the U.S.

Designed for three different age groups — Tweens, young adults and adults — the program is available, for free, in English and Spanish. Learn more about The ASPIRE Initiative and how you can stop domestic violence … before it starts.
