Permanent cosmetics can be scary, just take a look at some of the before and after photos floating out there on the web! It can be a daunting decision to choose just the right tech to perform your procedure. Here are 3 things to consider to help you feel at ease in making your decision about permanent cosmetics.
1. Consultation Meet with the technician in person prior to the procedure. Is the office clean and does your prospective tech meet your approval? Is she/he easy to talk to, do they communicate well? Most importantly check out her makeup, if you don't like the way she applies it on herself then don't let her near your face. What technique does he/she use, what is her/his philosophy on permanent cosmetics? This is a big decision, so make sure it's the right one.
2. Credentials Is the person licensed? I've worked in states like Idaho that require no licensure whatsoever (which is absurd) for permanent cosmetics. Has your permanent cosmetic tech taken courses to learn their craft? Have they taken courses on blood bourne pathogens and infection control? The possibility and risk for infection and spread of disease is very high, so be sure your tech uses standard practices to prevent them. Does your tech carry liability insurance?
3. Check It Out Word of mouth is your best bet in obtaining a referral, but if you don't have that, then by all means do some checking! Don't be afraid to ask questions. Before and After photos are extremely important, make sure you like what you see. How many years in the business? There are 2 important components to good permanent cosmetics, one is technical and the other artistic, does your tech have both?
Be informed and know what to look for before getting your work done; you'll be a satisfied customer and happy when you wake up and see your results in the mirror. Also remember that you will need to commit to touch-ups every 1-3 years if you want to keep it looking fresh. Eventually all permanent cosmetics fade.

I am a Permanent Makeup Specialist aka as a Micropigmentation Specialist/Technician. I am licensed thru the State of Alabama Dept. of Public Health in the county I live in. Bloodbourne Pathogen Classes are required and are controlled and inspected on a regular basis. I agree with some of the previous comments about checking out your technician with the State/County Health Dept., liability insurance, proper licenses for the city/state/business lic. and of course before and after photos as well as references. Permanent Makeup has come a long way and most procedures can be performed with rather little to no pain. There are very effective topical numbing agents just for permanent makeup procedures. Permanent Cosmetics also includes breast work, scar camouflaging and areola restoration coloring. Permanent cosmetics are much more natural looking than the "painted on look" of conventional makeup since the pigment is implanted under the skin for that natural look, soft veil of color showing. It also is great for those with physical handicaps, visual impairments, problems we experience as we get older, time-saving for the busy woman, atheletes, travelers, etc... Check it out and just go for it! You'll love it!
How would I go about finding somebody who does this?I wear glasses and cannot see without them,so I just don't wear it anymore and would like to.
LOOKING FOR A PERMANENT MAKEUP ARTIST?
If you are looking for someone who is very good you can of course contact the expert on the show: Debbie Miller www.newportpermanentmakeup.com She is one of the best in the world and teaches advanced courses to others in the industry. She is in Newport Beach, CA. Watch the archived episode on permanent makeup to see her.
If you are not in southern california then contact the trade association for a list of someone near you, however just belonging to the association does not insure they are artistic, experienced and educated. Check them out. That is www.spcp.org If they are not at least a member of the spcp i would keep looking.
As they said on the show, get someone who does it every day. Most everyone who knows about it has taken advantage of it, sort of like lasic surgery, now its mainstream, you just can't tell if its done well. What you can tell is when someone inexperienced did a poor job. The result we have all seen are those eyebrows that are too high or have turned purple. Don't worry, the experts won't do that to you, but if you are a victim of that, there are just a very few who can fix those well as it takes some experience. So if you need corrective work because maybe the girl who does your pedicures offered you an "eyebrow special" and didn't realize what you were doing, its sad, but not entirely permanent. It can most likely be corrected. Scars and post breast reconstructions are another application of permanent makeup that many, even many physicians, are still not aware of. Definately contact someone if you are a candidate. We all like to be the best we can be.
