Marilyn Milos RN, Circumcision

September 20, 2005.

According to the Webster’s dictionary, circumcision is a religious rite of the Jews and Muslims. The second definition offered is a cleansing from sin.

CIRCUMCISION is a powerful limbic imprint. Because the baby boy is taken into the surgery from his mother’s arms, right after being born, it interferes with bonding and breastfeeding. After the surgery the baby is faced with a very difficult task of re-connecting with the word that just violated his genital integrity. It is a primal wound that undermines his capacity to establish trust.

Circumcision is where sex and violence meet for the first time. It imprints the connection between the brain and penis with pain instead of pleasure. Not one international medical association in the world recommends it. It is not performed in Europe, Russia, Asia and Australia for other then religious purposes.

Circumcision, in medical terms: “Penis Reduction Surgery” was performed until recently on 95% of American male infants”. 2003 statistics are 56%.

The actual procedure is the cutting off the foreskin from the penis. The foreskin (prepuce) is the movable fold of skin on the distal portion of the penis that comprises almost half of the penile skin system. The foreskin has three known functions:

1. Protection. The foreskin covers and protects the urinary opening (meatus), and the glans (head) of the penis, keeping the mucous membrane soft, moist, and sensitive;

2. Sensory. The foreskin contains 20-40,000 highly specialized, erogenous nerves that allow a male to know where he is in relation to the orgasmic trigger. These specialized nerves (Meissner's corpuscles) are nowhere in the body more concentrated than they are in the ridged band encircling the foreskin's opening;

3. Sexual. The foreskin provides the tissue necessary for a full erection and the gliding mechanism necessary for normal sexual function. The ridged band averts with intercourse, exposing the ridged band's concentrated sensory nerve endings. These nerves provide adequate sexual sensations, as well as, when stretched, stimulate the bulbocavernosal muscle responsible for ejaculation.

Overall:

*The foreskin is a normal, protective, sexually functioning organ.

*Circumcision is a very painful, imputative surgery with inherent risks, including hemorrhage, infection, surgical mishap, and death.

*It is painful even when analgesia is used, because even the administering of anesthesia itself is also painful.

*Circumcision leaves both physical and deep psychological scars. It denies a male's right to genital integrity and to a fully functioning penis.

*Introduces pain into the genital pleasure.

*And most of all it impairs a male’s capacity to trust and introduces pain into the genital pleasure.

The earliest oral history of genital cutting comes from the Dogon tribe in Africa. They believed that people were born dual-gendered and the male part, the clitoris, had to be excised from the female baby and the female part, the foreskin, had to be removed from the male child. So that people would become single gendered and could procreate.

Some claim that Egyptians practiced circumcision, based on a bas relief found in the tomb of Ankhmahor (6th dynasty, c 2300 BC), at Saqqarah, Egypt. Others claim that the boys depicted in the relief were not being circumcised, rather, they were being shaved. Some claim that circumcised Egyptian mummies have been found.

Next came Abraham's covenant with God, supposedly around 1700 BC. However, the Genesis 17 text was written over a thousand years after Abraham was supposed to have lived. Discussing religious rites around the globe is not the purpose of this article, so we'll move on to the medical history of circumcision.

During the mid-1800s in the English-speaking countries circumcision was believed to be the cure from masturbation, then believed to cause a myriad of ills, including scoliosis, hernia, gout, kidney disorders, blindness, epilepsy, and insanity.

By the turn of the century, the microscope was developed, and a fear of germ became the next excuse. Penile cancer was the fear of the '30s. Cervical cancer was the fear of the '50s. Sexually transmitted diseases were the fear of the '60s. Urinary tract infection was the excuse in the '80s. Also during the '80s, circumcision was believed to prevent AIDS. However, the USA has one of the highest HIV rates, as well as one of the highest circumcision rates in the world.

In American hospitals, until recently, circumcision was routinely performed on a great majority of infants, whose parents were not given proper explanation or were not properly informed that they have a choice. In the last few years, however, there have been a significant decline in statistics: now in California it’s around 20%, on the West Coast in general – around 35%, in Central and Eastern states – 70-80%.
Today, not one national or international medical association in the world recommends circumcision.

As with every foreigner who is not from the Middle East, I was in shock when I found out what's being done to the baby boys here in America. I want to share with you what I found out about the history of circumcision.

The ritual of circumcision started thousands of years ago in Africa, in the Dagon tribe. They believed that babies were born double-gendered, that the boys needed to have the female part (foreskin) removed from their genitalia and the girls had to have the male part (clitoris) removed, so they would be able to procreate. They believed that without circumcision they wouldn't be able to have healthy children. Currently, on average, 3 million girls a year are still being circumcised in the Middle East and Africa. They lose their clitoris' in excruciating pain, without anesthesia, without sterilization, with dull blades or a piece of broken glass...

When it started a long time ago it was not about spirituality, just a superstition. But then the tribal leaders (shamans) noticed that uncircumcised people were much more likely to have their own minds and do things their own way, and circumcision became mandatory. It was a way of breaking their spirit, branding of a sort, making of soldiers and slaves.

As Shamans were the ones in power they declared it to be the will of God, who would argue with that... From there it was easy to catch up... Well, maybe it was necessary for the Jews wandering for 40 yrs. in the desert for their hygiene. But as to why is it being done in the US in the 21st century, is a good question. According to the Webster’s dictionary, circumcision is a religious rite of the Jews and Muslims. The second definition offered is a cleansing from sin. Also, parents are not informed how horrible circumcision is. It is happening behind closed doors.

And as far as the subject of spirituality is concerned, I believe that God created the foreskin in the first place. Why would God demand cutting off something from a brand new baby right after it was made? Especially, an exquisitely sophisticated something? That piece of skin has 20,000 very specific erogenous nerve endings that are not repeated anywhere else in the man's body.

I talked with a rabbi in Israel who is against circumcision. He said it's not even in the Torah. There is no direct sentence in the Torah saying it should be done. It's pretty vague and can be interpreted every which way. You can talk to him yourself: Nathan@rabbinatan.com. Besides, no Jewish man had a direct experience of God demanding it from them. Somebody told them that somebody told somebody that God told somebody...

And all those somebodies were mere humans, which means they could have been mistaken... They were men who wanted to mess with other men's heads, to control them, their energy - their very lives! - that's who wanted the foreskins. As a sign of submission to them, to ideas they put in their heads. The same way as thousands of years ago, those who needed soldiers and slaves - accomplished it by collecting the foreskins.

Somehow they understood that when it's done to a boy, it disconnects him from his mother, breaks that tender bond between them forever. As the baby boy is taken from his mother's arms and subjected to this torture, the only way the baby can interpret it - is as a betrayal by her. He will never again trust her or connect with her. He can be trained to show her some respect and behave appropriately, but that deepest wound in his heart never heals, unless he knows about it and wants to make an enormous effort to forgive her. But that requires a very evolved soul. Most of the men simply don't know that they carry that deep pain within them, where it came from and why, - they just act it out unconsciously, by hurting their mothers, their lovers, themselves and other people...

So, circumcision is a sure way to create a disheartened population, easily manipulated onto a path of war. Because, how do you make empowered people who have the capacity to love (who are not driven by subconscious pain and can trust their mothers' love), - how do you make them kill each other? First you need to disempower them. And the easiest way to whip somebody into submission is to do it in the name of God.

God does not want anybody's foreskin. It was created for a good reason. It plays a vital role in the man's flow of sexual energy and experience he is able to deliver to his woman. With overwhelming majority of circumcised males in the US, we have a very sexually unsatisfied nation on our hands... A circumcised man might not lose his capacity to be aroused entirely, but on some level, he knows that something's missing, whether he is aware of it or not, - his lovemaking skill is greatly diminished. He needs to put a lot of effort into acquiring the skills, necessary to make up for a missing body part. But for that they, first of all, need to be aware of it and, secondly, feel the need to learn the art of lovemaking. And how many men do we know who are willing to do that? So, the great majority of women, after they have a child, are not interested in renewing their sexual interaction, because it's not very pleasurable for them and just not very interesting... They have no reference point of what it supposed to feel like!

The original attraction that generated enough lust to create the baby, wears off. Most women continue with their "wifely duty" after giving birth for the only reason,- to keep her husband happy, if they care about it at all. Sexual frustration keeps them separate and is one of the main reasons for too many broken homes! Some men, after many, many years of very difficult relationships partially recover that part of their nervous system, but never fully. With rare exception of couples that managed to establish strong intimate connection before the baby was born.

And of course, it's not just about sex. First of all, it's about the post-circumcision inability to fully experience trust and connect with another woman on a deep, soulful heart level. After what's been done to little boys as their first experience of being in the body, very few people have a happy enough childhood to recover from that torture. Secondly, it wires their nervous system to interpret suffering and pain as their "comfort zone", so they become an easy prey to controlling mechanisms of all sorts. When that torture goes into the limbic imprint, it impairs that man's capacity to discern up from down, so to speak. He would have a hard time understanding right from wrong. As the world established itself to be not a very safe place when the baby's integrity is so harshly violated, it leaves him with the basic "modus operandi" that this world is not the right place for him to be in. It imprints a man to be always in the "emergency" mode, in fear-based mentality. It's almost impossible to find any degree of happiness in such a world. He would have to come up with a variety of coping techniques to numb his pain: addictions and drugs, mainly, of all sorts...

If someone believes that a torturous mutilation of the infant's body is a godly thing to do, it's on their conscience... Besides, DOCTOR'S OBLIGATION IS, FIRST OF ALL, TO THE PATIENT, not to the patient's parents or their beliefs. But I'm talking about hundreds of millions of circumcised infants that did not have their say in it, whose parents didn't even believe in the Old Testament or are not Jewish or Muslim. These babies were tortured for absolutely nothing! There are no medical reasons for it!

There were different trends at different times to believe that there were some medical benefits, but they all were short lived. Cleanliness? What if his hands will get dirty? Cut them off, too?

First of all, your post was way too long, no one's going to read from top to bottom.  Second, my husband is circumcised and his penis works just find.  Sex is awesome, the circumcision doesn't hinder anything.  I have 3 children, all boys and all circumcised.  Get your facts straight.  They were not taken away from me after birth, we all bonded just fine.  I made an appointment with a specialist around their schedule in the first 2 weeks.  Yes it hurt them, they were fussy for a day or too, but tylenol helps.  They are not tramatized nor do they remember it, and they reconnected with life and people just fine.  And my husband, brothers and father are all just fine.  We did it not for religious views but for cleanliness.  When they're young they can clean themselves, but as they age they may have difficulties and I'm sure they don't want a nurse to clean them in their upmost private area, they will still have pride.  And it's a lot easier for others to clean your hands than your penis!  How will you feel when some strange person is cleaning your vagina?

Helo Missy,  I didn't write this :) It was written by Marilyn Milos a Registered Nurse and I am just posting it here.  She founded the National Organization of Circumcision Information Resource Centers.  If you want to discuss about circ you can go to the message boards and do so there.  Thanks :)

Well I agree with Missy...I have cousins who were never circumsised and they had to have the proceedure done in there teens because they didn't clean themeselves properly. Trust me it is way more traumatic as a teen then it is a baby...

latinamomof3

dear ohyyanutz, that doesn't seem to be a valuable reason to cut someone's penis.  I wonder if I should cut my daughter's clitoris because it is always getting irritated due to improper hygiene.  I need to keep remind them to do so.  You can read the last sentence of this blog too. "Cleanliness? What if his hands will get dirty? Cut them off, too?"

Again, you can see a lot of posts about this issue at the boards:

God Bless and Happy Thanksgiving.

ohyanutz

They had to have it done because they got really bad infections...I'm talking really bad...they didn't have a choice but to have the circumsisions...doctor's order...all this pain and suffering could of been avoided had they gotten it done when they were babies!!! I'm done talking to you about this you're obviously not going to look at both the pros and cons.

Jim_T

Ohyahnutz, it most likely didn't need to be done.

many cirumcisions are perfomed in the USA for no good reason.  this is because most doctors in the USA are circumcised and will cirumcise a baby as afirst course of action.

Secondly many mothers are incorrectly told to pull the foreskin back and clean it. You are not supposed to pull the foreskin back.  Most infection occur for these reasons.

Most countries do not cirumcise (80% of the world are intact) and their men never have to.

SANITA

I HAD MY SON CIRCUMSIZED WHEN HE WAS BORN. I LOVE THE FACT THAT HE IS AND I AM GLAD THAT WE DID IT WHEN HE WAS BORN BECAUSE IT WAS THE BEST THING FOR HIM. EVERYBODY IN MY FAMILY IS CIRCUMSIZED AND NOBODY IS COMPLAINING THEY ARE ALL ENCOURAGING IT. FOR MY SON I LOVE IT AND IT IS A RELIGIOUS BELIEF ALSO. BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY IT IS A PERSONAL CHOICE.

Lochinvar

Sanita,

You are correct, it IS a personal choice. Not one to be made by any other person than the man himself. And as such, a man should have his own decision honored.

ohyanutz,

The trauma to a baby is extreme. And not necessary. Most men in the world never have it done.

Among other things, the foreskin provides:

  • Protection. The foreskin fully covers the glans (head) of the flaccid penis, thereby protecting it from damage and harsh rubbing against abrasive agents (underwear etc) and maintaining its sensitivity;
  • Sexual sensitivity. The foreskin provides direct sexual pleasure in its own right, as it contains the highest concentration of nerve endings on the penis;
  • Lubrication. The foreskin, with its unique mucous membrane, permanently lubricates the glans, thus improving sensitivity and aiding smoother intercourse;
  • Skin-gliding during erection. The foreskin facilitates the gliding movement of the skin of the penis up and down the penile shaft and over the glans during erection and sexual activity;
  • Varied sexual sensation. The foreskin facilitates direct stimulation of the glans during sexual activity by its interactive contact with the sensitive glans;
  • Immunological defence. The foreskin helps to keep the glans clean by the secretion of anti-bacterial agents to protect it.
Lochinvar

Consider this well. Circumcision is not performed on animals. WHY? If there were ANY benefit for real(not imagined as is the case of Male Genital Mutilation) we would be doing it to our pets, livestock and show animals because their health is very important to us. But there is NO benefit at all. That is just wishful speculation we have come up with to justify mutilating our babies, and in fact, it is nothing more than a smoke screen to hide the REAL ISSUE. And THAT is the Human Rights of the child who will sometime in the future, be a man. It should be HIS choice, and his alone to make when he is legally able to give consent(or not).
