Hello! I had a doctor appointment with a specialist who I had never seen before last week. Her nurse had me change into a gown. When the doctor walked into the room, she said: "I'm Dr. X." I extended my hand to shake hands, and proceeded to introduce myself. She said, "I don't shake hands anymore with this flu virus going around." Then she stood there and reviewed my medical history verbally. She told me to sit on the table, and did not wash her hands or put on gloves. She listened to my heart, lungs, and abdomen. and she palpated my neck with her hands. Then she said she was ordering some blood work and would see me back in a couple weeks. She walked out the door without washing her hands or using the hand sanitizer that was attached to the wall by the door. All I could think of was that she put her hands all over me, but wouldn't even shake hands as a pleasant gesture when she walked into the room. She presented with such a cold persona that I felt like I had just been examined by a human ice box. I was angry at myself for not telling her to wash her hands before and after she touched me. Am I being overly sensitive?

No, you are not. In Canada, they are giving nurses classes on how to wash their hands. I think that's kind of sad, but even my mom had to take that course. You should file a complaint or ask the doctor next time. You are protecting yourself, and you have every right to do so.
Absolutely not! This is your health and your concerns and it made no sense to me that she didn't shake hands yet didn't even wash them!
my dr. never washes his hand when he touches me ever im in canada

Cuddles05, you should ask your doctor to wash his hands next time. It was all over the news that doctors are required to take a handwashing course. Well, it was in British Columbia for sure. That's where I live. My mom is a home support nurse, and she had to take that course.
No. You are not overly sensitive and she is not carrying things too far, actually she is not carrying things far enough. I can understand if she didn't want to shake hands, but she needed to wash her hands before and after touching you.
absolutely not Id find a new doctor she sounds like she has the personality and bedside manner of a twig. I tell my dr to wash there hands if they dont like it oh well. I went to my pulmo and he strrolled in like he was just there to do a job and that was it no compassion. He asked me if I had animals in the house ,I said my son has a hamster.first words out of his mouth were get rid of it kill it if you have to. Well im not going back to him Im seeing someone else in the practice. He did the same thing with the hand washing. I said arent you going to wash your hands? he got angry but oh well.Ya have to stick up for yourself
