Help

I can not figure out what to do, The area Doctors think that it is Acid Reflux.

My son is going on 2 months, he can not keep anything down. I was only breastfeeding him for the first month in a half and he could never keep it down. He started spitting it everything he ate and now he is throwing it all up so hard it flys across the couch.  So i started doing formula, then formula mixed with some cereal and still no change. I give him gas drops everytime I feed him, I feed him sitting up, laying down, I stopped every ounce and tried to burp him, i burp him after, let him sleep on my chest in a prone pisition, I fed him a little more often, I fed him alot less often, and now he is on medication for acid reflux and things seem to just be worse. He can kind of keep really thick cereal down but when i give him some milk to wash it down, his tummy just wont take it and throws it up. I know I am not suppota give him anything other then milk but nothing else even comes close to staying down. He is upset most the time cause he always hungry. The doctors say eveything is fine cause he gain a little weight in a month... but he dropped in the weight percents he was very high in the growth percents he was just doing so good and he was in the top, but then he just dropped and now is in the lower percents barely gaining anything.  :( I am just lost.

It's sounds like acid-reflux.My grandson had that when he was an infant. He ended up in the hospital.Keep an eye on it and if you feel its worse and he keeps losing weight go back to doctor and demand answers or change doctors.Don't let your baby suffer.I suffer with it as an adult and it's very painful.....

Kitaweihert,

I had this problem with my oldest daughter, we finally switched her to soy and things were better.  This was 17 years ago though, she was diagnosed with failure to thrive, which just means she wasn't gaining weight.  Unfortunately we never really did figure out what was the cause of the projectile vomit, the good news is she is 17 now and she is fine.  Keep doing what you're doing, be sure and be completely honest with your doctor, it will also help to keep a journal of when you feed your child and when they vomit, and aproximately how much, this will help your doctor understand how bad the problem is.  I'm sorry I couldn't be more help.  Good luck, I remember how scary that was.

I agree with SleepTech, I'd try switching to soy.  Is your baby gaining weight at the normal rate for height/weight?

My friends twin boys had this problem and come to find out they were allergic to something in the formula so maybe trying different formulas might help. They were also on zantac 75 to try and help keep the formula down but it was always comming back up and they had to keep trying different formula.

Hey came across ur problem i thought o woud say to u that one of my friends babies had this same problem and to help her they had to give her a formula that coasted about 30 bucks a pop no one would help her pay for it no one. I dont remember what it was called i do remember that to help her sleep and keep anything down they had to have her sleep up right do to digesting problems. They found out that when she would laydown or sleep all the food would come back up in the prosses. So try having him sit up more and put his mattress in his crib at an agngle this also helps with colic so u know. I hope ur little one gets better realy soon and im sorry u are having so many problems with this. Hope u find the answer u are looking for.

God Bless Maria Miller Mother of 3.

Bryant, I have tryied more then just formula. I have Breastfed, and I have tried more then one formula. He can not keep milk down peirod, something about it not being heavy enough.

Kitty, I have also tried the sleeping poistions. I have had him slep on stnding up (while laying on my chest) , I had him sleep at a slight angle, I have had him sleep falt, I aslo have had him slep on his back and on his tummy in those positions, as while tried him sleeping on his sides in all the positions. Sadly none helped him, when he wakes up he still throws it up I have even noticed him occasianlly throwing up in his sleep. Thanks You for your suggestions though! And your thoughts.

When my daughter was little, I would nurse her and then sit her up to burp her.  I would tend to bounce her on my knee or jiggle her a bit too much causing bubbles that were underneath the milk she had just been drinking.  Sometimes I wouldn't even burp her at all.  I was a new mother and didn't quite know what to do.  It was worse when I used formula but when I was nursing, it was only regular spit up.  Do you have a bottle with a very large hole in the top?  Maybe he's getting too much milk all at once so any bounce or jiggle while burping him could be making him get gas and pain.  It sounds a bit like colic mixed with maybe too much milk in one sitting.  I was told to sit my daughter still carefully on my knee and feed her sitting upright.  Then just put my hand under her chin and pat or rub her back until she burped.  The soy formula helped a lot too but some children just get colic and that's where you'll hear pain in his cries.  I think I may have been a nervous mother and my baby picked up on that too.  Now she's grown and still has some stomach troubles so it just could be the way some children are born.  I sure hope you get some answers soon and if he doesn't gain weight, listen to that voice inside your head and find a doctor who will help.  1st, 2nd and 3rd opinions if you have to.  You sound like a very caring person and I hope you find the answer.

My daughter had this same problem when she was an infant, and I was a first time mom and at my wit's end! She ended up sleeping in a snuggly ON me for most of the day, and at nite she slept on her side. Yes, she still projectile vomitted until she was about 12 weeks. I managed to keep breastfeeding her, as the health nurse suggested that anything else at that point might only aggravate the vomitting. It is not the weight of the milk (and btw..you should never introduce solids/cereal to an infant before 4 months) but the fact is you have a colicky baby. Patience at this point is all you can muster up, and just keep topping up the feeding, in short spurts, rather that longer periods of time between feedings. Avoiding the baby getting antsy about when the next feeding helps too. We also did some 'bicycle' movements with her legs to help with the upset tummy which is very painful, but can be aleviated by this movement. Finally, warm compresses on the tummy help too. My daughter loved laying across a warmed towel (that had been warming up in the clothes dryer). All these things seemed to help in little ways but the real healer is time. By the time the baby reaches 12 weeks, things will run alot smoother with less puking and more smiling!

One extra thing that helped alot was giving her peppermint tea in a bottle-we tried to give her about an ounce of it about 3 times a day(room temperature or slightly warmed) she fought it at first, but by the second day, she was taking it well. My grandmother suggested it but my doctor almost had kittens when I told him what I was doing. I told him it seemed to be working better than anything he had to offer!!LOL! I just put a teabag of pure peppermint tea into about 10 ounces of hot water, let it steep for about an hour...then refrigerated it. Put about an ounce in a bottle just before her morning feeding, and slightly warmed. I did not get around to trying this until she was 6 weeks old, but it seemed to be helping more that not.

I know you said you've tried alot of different formulas for your son, but I know that because my daughter was having a similar problem after she was reintroduced to formula instead of nutrients, fats, and proteins from IV's they put her on a formula called pregestimil. A post from someone  before this one mentioned a formula that was about $30 made me think of this. It is about $30 and it's made by the same people that make enfamil. It is pregestimil with lipids. This is what I feed my daughter along with rice cereal. If it is too expensive you should look into seeing if where you live offers a program like WIC. This program has been a life saver for me. The WIC program covers the cost of 8 cans of this formula which comes out to the rediculous amount of about $230 or so. If where you live offers a program like this one you will have to have a prescription from your pediatrician to get that specific type. This specific type of formula is for babies that have problems gaining weight and I think it's easier on their stomachs. Before they switched my daughter to this she couldn't hold anything down at all. She would literally throw up atleast 10cc less than the entire amount she ate. This helped her, I really hope it helps your son if you try it. Good luck.

If your child is on medication such as Prevacid for the acid reflux and is still throwing up as you described then you need to go to your doctor and tell him/her that you want tests run to make sure nothing is wrong with his digestive system.  Do not be afraid to make this request.  The doctor works for you and it is better to be safe and rule out any physical problems that may exist.

A child can still gain weight and be sick.  A girl that I met in the hospital had a baby that was throwing up constantly and could not hold food down.  The baby was gaining weight but still had a physical problem that had to be dealt with.  You are the voice for your baby so don't be afraid to speak up.  I wish your baby the best of health.

This has nothing to do with being first time mother, I am not nerves and I am not scared. I am angry with his doctors for letting this go for so long and not try to help in anyway. Yes this is the first infant that I have giving birth to but it is not the first infant that I have raised. You tell me not to give him cereal, well then how in the hell do you expectme to get him to gain weight? Cereal is the only thing that he is keeping down, if I stop giving him cereal because of how old he is then he will starve. He is not Colicy, I have raised a colicly baby and he is not one. He is only upset and crying when he is hungry, and right before and during throwing up. After all the he is very very happy laugh and giggling. It hurts him to throw it all up whichmakes him cry, he can not keep food down so he is hungry which makes him cry. Colic babies cry for no reason, they just can not find the comfort that they are looking for. And like I had stayed in the description, I know that I am not supposta give him anything but milk, but it is the only thing that comes close to staying down.

Yes, I am on the WIC program I will have to check in to that because they told me they only cover goodstart which I have already tried him on. He is not getting any of the milk down, it is coming right back right when I stop Feeding him.... It is almost like as long as he keeps sucking, he can keep it down but as soon as he is not sucking anymore then it all come back up.

I dont bounce him on my knee or anything, I have tried letting him sit in the same spot that he ate in and burping him there but still no help. I tried slowly moving him over my shoulder and burping him there still no luck, I have tried just slowly sitting him up from where was laying and then bruping but he still throws it up...... I even have tried gas drops before feeding, after feeding, or before burping and yet nothing.

Thank You for all Your Help!

Thanks For Your Help, I have just returned from another ER visit. I demanded answers and would not leave with out a ultarsound of his belly. The Final Diagnosis was Pyloric Stenosis, he has to be closely watched with many follow ups and a Possible GI and Surgery.

nicki_sew

Pyloric stenosis is most common in white babies. It affects more males than females — particularly firstborn males. Pyloromyotomy is a procedure done usually right after you have a diagnosis. My friend's baby boy was diagnosed with this, had surgery the same day( thru a small incision at his belly button, and laparascopically) and was home in a day and a half. He was diagnosed at 2 1/2 weeks old, and is 14 mo old now, and doing well. Hopefully your doctors will act as quickly as Karen's did. Btw, for about four hours before the surgery, they gave Tyler intravenous fluids to boost his electrolytes and salts in his system, so he did well during the short surgery.

kitaweihert

Yes, we go in on monday thank you for the information on the surgery!

I am very glad to hear that you have finally gotten the answers you needed to help your baby feel better. After they fixed the problem with him not being able to keep anything down you may want to look into getting the formula I mentioned before. The only thing is, in order for WIC to cover it you must have a prescription. It is made by enfamil and it is called pregestimil. I know that where I live it was very difficult to find at stores so you may have to call ahead and get the store you prefer to order it. The reason I still suggest it is that because he has been throwing up his food for so long he may need a little help gaining the weight he needs and pregestimil is easy on the stomach and helps babies gain weight when they are unable to with other formulas. And I would continue the rice cereal. I know it helped me finally get my baby looking like a healthy little roly poly baby :). Yes she is still only about 10 or 11 pounds at 3 months which is still some what small but this formula and the rice cereal and what ever medicine your doctor has prescribed for acid will help if he has acid reflux/GURD on top of the stomach condition. I am so happy for you. I can't wait until you can get the normal baby experience you deserve because trust me when I say that after you go through difficult things like this you will appreciate him so much. (not saying you don't already) I know that I never realized how much fun a child could be until after I almost lost her. I hope everything goes well for you :). Please let us know how things go. I've had you in my prayers.
