Adding Cereal to baby's formula? Good/Bad?

My sister has a 3mth old, who spits up all the time. Her Dr. keeps switching formula and nothing is getting better. A friend of hers told her to add cereal to his bottle. Is this good or bad for him?

IMO only, I think a 3 month old is too young to start on food...I'd ask your pediatrician.

I added rice cereal to both of my kids formula by the time they were that age.My grandkids even had rice cereal added to theirs(and I have 5 of them)But you should call the doctor to see what they say.But usually they don't recommend it,I don't know why.I hope some of the others ladies on here answer.I would like to see what the majority of them say they did.

When my son was that age he seemed to always be hungry. My dr. suggested adding cereal to his formula for that reason. It didn't seem to hurt him.

I was lucky in the department of my children never spitting up more than a teaspoon at a time on the rare occassions they did. It's not recommended for a normal growing baby. But! If the baby is projectile vomiting and not holding down food, it is recommended. She needs to take the baby to the Doctor and figure out why the baby is spitting up soo much. If "Acid Reflux" is the culprit, rice can be used to thicken the milk. The reason why rice cereal isn't recommended for younger babies is because of allergies. Many types of food introduced to babies the earlier on, the more likely they can develop allergies. Rice cereal can also add extra empty calories that isn't as nutrious as breast milk/formula. Adding extra cereal will reduce the amount of formula the baby drinks. Benefits outway the risks is cases where babies are constantly throwing up their milk though. The rice will give the milk "extra weight" and it isn't as easily thrown back up in contrast to the runny light weight milk. I think they even make baby formula with rice cereal already added in it.

hello. It is not yet the right time for you sister`s baby to have it. Too young on that. Her baby may start it on 6 months, not now. Tell her it is not yet the time. Her pediatrician have not told her yet. Before she would do something for her baby, better seek some advice from the doctor. When you introduce food to the baby, one particular food for a week. This is to determine if the baby is allergic to the food. Do not forget to burp the baby after each feeding. Hope my message is not yet too late.

Thank you all for the advice. She took him in to the Dr. last Friday, and the Dr. started him on formula that has rice in it. She told her they don't like adding rice in bottles because it can cause constipation. Then could end up having intestinal problems.

Thanx agin everybody:)
