Depending on how much magnesium you are taking, that could be the cause....magnesium can have a laxative effect when taken in large doses.
Melissa.
You would have to be taking a lot of magnesium for it to have that type of effect. On your other post you mention HzTz (Hydrochlorothiazide) and since that is a diarretic it may have that type of side effect. I would suggest that you try to stay on this medication as long as you can tolerate it-to reduce your BP, because it is priobably one of the safest high blood pressure medications you can take. There are other medications for high BP but you are going to have side effect with those medications as well. ACE inhibitors and Beta Blockers-which would be the next step to lower you BP can cause headaches and servere orthostatic hypotension, which basically means that when you stand up you will get so dizzy that you may black-out breifly. This is because when you go from a sitting/lying position to a standing position, on these types of medications your brain will temporarily have a reduction in blood flow causing dizziness and possibly fainting. I take Clonidine-which works well for me and doesn't seem to cause as much dizziness as other types of blood pressure medications. Medications for blood pressure, such as propranolol, which is a beta blocker-can actually help prevent migraines (but in a small number of people-they can actually cause headaches). It is really interesting to me that a lot of medications that are designed to treat specific illnesses, like headache medications, list headaches as one of the possible side effects. How insane is that. Anyway, take care and I hope to chat with you again soon!
I'm not a doctor (but I played one on tv), but I have experienced simular symptoms of diarrea after taking magnesium. I tried reducing the amount of magnesium supplements, but the only thing that worked was to stop taking them (for me). I would document everything you eat, what time you eat it, and what the symptoms are. This way you can start to eliminate the culprits. We also see an alternative medicine group and are big on homeopathic and herbal supplements. That has actually been working the best for me as well as my daughter who has very severe G.I. issues. You should definately contact your doctor though and be your own advocate. If you are not getting the answers you need from him, then get a second oppinion. Hope that helps.
