Xerostomia (dry mouth)

  Hi Bloggers,

I would like to mention something about what Dr. Travis had said about dry mouth.  If you experience dry mouth try not to stimulate your salivary glands by sucking on lemon candy....try something with less sugar. Something like Sugarless gum.  I am a dental hygienist, and I see people come in sometimes with xerostomia, and they are prone to getting cavities. Our saliva acts as a buffer to wash away bacteria.  People with xerostomia have the bacteria sitting on their teeth, and it does not get washed away by the saliva, therefore it can cause cavities (aka caries).  Like the Doctors said, drink more water to keep your mouth moist.

What great advice! I used those lemon candies for years with the expected outcome!

Also you could let peolpe know that telling the Dentist that they are taking certain medications...ie: drugs for depression ect... are anticholinergic and ....dry mouth will prevail...I lived with cracks  in the corners of my mouth for more years then I care to remember....There was ( unfortunately there is still is a stigma attached to mental illness) I finally decided my dental hygiene was more important!) Now my dentist knows all and my dental hygiene is the best it ever has been!

H2O That's the way to go... :)))))
