Doctors Cannot Diagnose Me

Hello All,

I am a healthy 27 year old female.  About a year ago I went to the ER for numbness in my face, right arm, and right leg.  After an MRI and series of tests, the neurologists passed it off as a side effect of migraines, silent migraines.  My family has a history of Migraines, brother, grandmother, etc. that are very severe.  I had never had a bad headache before.

In November/December 2009 I came down with Laryngitis and it lasted for about 3 to 4 weeks. Then went away.  Periodically after which my voice would go out and the doctors told me to not talk.  In March they gave me a prescription for what they thought may have been strep throat farther down in my throat which they thought would clear up my voice problems, I did not feel sick at all and it did not fix anything.  ON March 17th I went back to the doctors and they gave me a referral to the ENT.  The ENT said that my vocal cords had seperated and I needed speech therapy.  On April 5th I went for speech therapy and she scheduled the throat manipulation for April 6th.  It's a massage and manipulation of the muscles and bones in my neck.  She indicated the hyoit bone needed to be pulled 30 minutes to an hour after the session I came out speaking with a stutter.

On April 7th I called the speech therapist back and she referred me back to ENT. ENT said that my vocal cords are now fine and I needed to go to the emergency room because he thought I may have had a stroke or possibly have lyme disease. The ER doctors and neurologist on duty said it was none of that and they ordered an MRI.  My MRI came out perfectly normal.  Here are my symptoms:

  • Numbness in my face, right arm, and right leg.
  • Swollen neck and face on right side.
  • Headaches, very bad ones, I think they are migraines
  • Stuttering speech
  • When talking I sound sound like a foreigner with some stuttering
  • Ear aches
  • Cannot control how loud I am talking, my family tells me to lower my voice as it sounds like I'm yelling.

I do not know what is wrong and the doctors cannot tell me either.  When I laugh it is normal.  I'm very frustrated because I cannot work.  I manage a bank and work with people all day long and in my current state I cannot work as I'm afraid people will not understand me.  The doctors told me not to work and to relax.  I cannot relax because I am frustrated about what is wrong with me.  I want to speak normal again, but do not know how to get fixed.  Something is clearly not right.  Has anyone ever experienced this or know someone that has experienced this?

Thank you.

Jenne

If you have any questions about Lyme disease, there is a person on this site under the username COOTER who could really help you.  If you have questions about migraines, there is a person with the username MIGRAINESURGERY, who could help you also.

Have you heard of hemiplegic migraine?

My sister-in-law has these. She had paralysis, slurred speech, weakness, etc. She could do very little for herself when it would happen. They were pretty bad and she had them for 13 or more years. Recently she had her deviated septum repaired (her nose passage). Somewhere she read that it may help. It has done wonders for her. All she can figure is that something to do with the pressure and nerves in there has made a difference. She has the migraines much less often and also I believe much less severe if she does. She put off the repair of the deviated septum for quite a while because she didn't like the thoughts of it and the time to recover but she is really glad she did it. The doctor she had that was working with her for the migraines didn't think fixing the deviated septum would do any good and was really surprised at how much it helped her. She is almost a new person now. I'm not sure. Maybe it was eventually a neurosurgeon who diagnosed her with the type of migraine.

I don't know what kind of medications etc she was on and other things she tried before but she suffered for years with not much relief. She is doing really well now.

Are you by any chance taking, or have you recently taken a cephalosporin antibiotic, brand name Keflex, generic  cephalexin. I had similar symptoms after taking cephalexin for three days. I finally found out this year what it was -- it was an allergy caused by the drug interacting with an enzyme and causing my body to see the enzyme as a foreign substance. My body was attacking the enzyme. Over time, my body was able to recover, but it took 8 months for the majority of the symptoms to subside.

Have you have your vitamin D level checked.  If not, ask your doctor for a 25OHD test. Vitamin D is a hormone, and it affects the entire body when you are deficient. Get Dr. Holick's new book, The Vitamin D Solution and look in the index for migraines in particular -- there is a lot of evidence now that migraines are caused by vitamin D deficiency. The reason is that vitamin D is actually a hormone, not a vitamin, and it regulates 2000-6000 genes in the body. Without the proper gene regulation, all kinds of things go wrong.

See my profile and look for the section on "tips to take to your doctor" on how to get tested, etc. Make sure you are also getting the USRDA of calcium, magnesium, and iodine.

I hope this helps.
