Definately follow the MD"S advice and get the MRI.  Also keep the follow ups and if it doesn't resolve as they are suggesting it will, I would get a second opinion.  Thanks for letting me know.  Jacque'

We went to the ophthalmologist!  Good news is that he does not need glasses yet.  Bad news is he has something called Spasmus Nutans, which is generally benign in children under 3.  He said it will likely resolve by the time he is 2.  Spasmus mutans is an acquired nystagmus that is usually associated with head nodding and head tilt.  My son does both. They believe the head nodding is to improve the vision and decrease the nystagmus.  The characteristic feature is very fine, rapid pendularenature of the nystagmus.  The eyes appear to have a shimmering movement.  It may be horizontal, vertical or torsional.  It is usually asymmetric to the point that it may appear unilateral.  It may appear to switch eyes with changes in direction of the gaze and frequently appears worse in the abducting eye If a child develops Spasmus Nutans after 3 it indicates a tumor an intracranial tumor.  He still wanted to do and MRI of my son's brain just to be sure there are no problems.  What do you think?

Thank You!  I scheduled his appointment with the pediatric ophthalmologist for December 8th.  I got a referral when he was 6 months old but I was kinda waiting to see if it resolved itself.  Now I'm glad I asked you!!!  His daddy had really bad eyesight when he was a kid (but it was corrected with lasik) so maybe he inherited his daddy's eyesight.  :(  I will let you know what they say.  Can they give glasses to a baby this small?  He will be 10 months at the time of the appointment.  Pardon my ignorance, I haven't done much research about eye issues.
