Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

About a year ago I went to a doctor to have my thyroid tested. I had been gaining weight like crazy since I had my daughter. My pre-pregnancy weight was 135lbs and when I gave birth I was about 200lbs, instantly lost 40lbs after my daughter was born and then gradually started gaining it back and then more! So I went to a Dr. figuring it was my thyroid since hypothyroid runs in my family. She didnt listen to anything I had to say and wouldnt look me in the eyes until the end and said "you just need to go to a gym" I was completely shocked! Here I am already upset with my body and this woman says this to me. I was so upset I cried for a few days over the whole thing. I eventually found another Dr. and despite the mixed feelings went to her. She told me she thought I had PCOS and ran tests along with an ultra sound to see if there were any cysts. Although I had no cysts she still diagnosed me because I had so many other symptoms. Sadly this is a disease that not many women or Doctors know about!

PCOS affects your daily life in so many ways! Some of the symptoms are:

1.) hair loss

2.) weight gain

3.) abnormal periods (I went 2 yrs without a period before I went to a Dr...yes stupid me)

4.) male like hair growth (facial hair around you chin, neck, upper lip, etc.)

5.) fatigue (theres some days I can hardly get out of bed cause Im so tired...Ive learned I have to have 10 or more hours of sleep before I can even attempt to function for a day!)

6.) hormonal problems (I cant stand to be in 80+ degree weather but yet I can walk in 10 degree weather with sandles, jeans, and a sweat shirt only and be fine)

7.) Fertility problems

There are sooooooo many more issues this causes and I encourage you to research PCOS if you can say that one of those affect you. If you have been diagnosed with PCOS please add me as I would love to talk more with you. No one really understands what a person with PCOS goes through unlike someone suffering from the same disease!

No I don't have it  but my daughter does.It is very hard on her cause she is 33yrs old and would like to have a baby and hasn't been able to.Also the hair growth on her face and neck is just like a mans and is very embarrassing for her.Along with the other problems you have mentioned.

I was diagnosed in 2007 with PCOS...It was pretty devastating news on top of my current condition (fibromyalgia)! The only real symptoms I have is really heavy menises and hairloss...I also have some extra growth of hair on my face...such a weird condition to lose hair on your head to gain it other places...My doctor was very thourough and told me what to watch out for and now I have to be monitored for Diabeties.

I was first diagnosed with PCOS when I was around 19. I started my period when I was 9yrs old and when they weren't right the doctors told my mother that they would straighten out when I got older. Well it never did. I diagnosed myself and then took what I had found to my Dr. and she tested me for it. I was never able to have kids after trying and trying. Then I was diagnosed with depression/panic/anxiety and diabetes (type 2) and was told that the PCOS caused it. I'm not sure if it caused all the emotional problems but thats what I was told. Four yrs ago I had a endometrial ablasion because my period wouldn't stop and I had polips in my uterus that they didn't know was there till they did the surgery. But now after the surgery I have no periods not even spotting and of course still can't have kids. But I know what you are going through and am here if you need to talk.

Hi Jaimie,

I can totally empathize with your difficulties in getting diagnosed. I am a registed dietitian who has been specializing in pcos for the past 10 years. I see how it can take women years to get diagnosed and get the right treatments. As I am sure you are aware, diet/lifestyle play a major role in treating pcos. I wanted to pass some tips on to you and the other readers. I would also recommend you check out my blog called city girl bites and check out the pcos category. Best of luck to you!

Diet and Lifestyle Tips for PCOS (by Martha McKittrick, RD, CDE

- No one diet works for everyone. Each plan must be tailored to suit the individual. In my experience, I have found that women with PCOS who are very insulin resistant, especially if they are obese, often have an easier time losing weight and feel better on a lower carb diet. However this doesn’t mean that every women with PCOS needs to be on a very low carb diet.

- A priority in treating insulin resistance is weight loss. This is more important than the macronutrient composition of the diet. Even losing 5-10% of body weight will help decrease symptoms of PCOS.

- Exercise is a key factor in decreasing insulin resistance. The ideal program includes an aerobic and resistance training component. The resistance training component should focus on light weights and more repetition.

Hi, I am 28 and was also diagnosed with PCOS. My husband and I now want to have children. My gyne has put me on fertility pills that will allow me to ovulate to assist with falling pregnant. He has assured me that there is nothing to worry about and that I will be able to have children. Today was the last day of taking the pills. With in the next 2 months I have to go back to see the gyne and God Willing will have good news, that im pregnant. I will keep those of you that want children but have PCOS posted. So don't worry if you are thinking of having children,  no one can tell you that you can't. At the end of the day God is the one that will hear our prayers and Bless us with children.

hello well i have pcos as well and they didn't find any cysts but they diagnosed me with pcos im 19 and i've gained weight these past 4 years i have the horrible facial hair and have an irregular menstruation . what the ob/gyn told me was to either lose the weight or get on birth control because if i didn't regulate my periods when the time comes and i want to have babies i'm not going to be able to get pregnant . she told me that were born with it but as we get older something triggers it or something like that. so i feel you and the rest i know what you are going through
