A Quitter's Journey

created on: 02/21/11Today is the 4th morning of the 1st week I'm taking Chantix. My urges to smoke have been a little less today, which is good, because I can't go anywhere. Snowed in! :( Tonight I take the first night-time pill. I'm only a little anxious about that. I've heard about the vivid dreams and the sometimes insomnia, but I'm willing to sacrifice all that to become a successful quitter. I've been suicidal lately because of my status as a failed quitter. My doctor almost put me in the hospital, but there's Lucy to take care of (my dog, whom you see in my profile picture). Mom can't take care of her, because she's 83-yrs-old and shouldn't be expected to, and kennels are too expensive for that amount of time.

Three more days until I become a full-time quitter. Wish me luck!

Quitting is NOT easy..just like losing weight..we humans can be such addicts whether it's cigarettes, food, drugs, or whatever your addiction of choice.  The good news is...we do not need to be controlled by any of them!! I am speaking from experience.  I quit cold turkey..this was 4 years ago.  Honestly we need to have the attitude( now stay with me here) , that our health and quality of life means more than the addiction! That said, the bottom line is....1rst I want to quit, 2nd I will feel like crap for a short while when I do,(and it won't kill me), and 3rd., I AM GOING TO FEEL AMAZING WHEN I,M FREE!!!!!!!!!!!

YOU WILL DO THIS...YOU HAVE ALREADY TAKEN STEP 1...YOU WANT IT!!!!!!!!!

Chantix side effects!!

Leabra

I am on day 48 of not smoking! I started chantix in Nov. and I kept smoking, I just was not quite ready to quit smoking but knew I needed to. I kept taking the chantix until I had weaned down to 4 cigarettes a day, then picked my quit date. I could not have done it without chantix! I am around cigarettes all the time between my co-workers and family, but the chantix curbs the cravings and makes the cigarettes taste and smell horrible. It did cause nausea ( don't take on a empty stomach) and I did have strange dreams ( but most dreams are strange anyway) I think chantix is a miracle drug, plus do the get quit online support that comes with your prescrption, it encourages you and gives you ideas to help! Good luck!

First, congrats, Leabra and skinnygirl on quitting! That's no small feat. 2nd, I'm under a dr's care for my mental health issues as well as for the smoking prescription of Chantix (same doc, as a matter of fact), and he is aware of my deep depression at the moment - that's why he scheduled to see me in two weeks rather than a month, with the option always open for me to go to the ER if I needed to be admitted. I know what to do if I need urgent help, but I so appreciate and understand the concern after a post like I made.

Plus, TheDoctors just sent me a bunch of resource phone numbers if I should feel the need to call anyone for help.

I'm sorry if I worried anyone. My suicidal feelings were mostly due to the fact that I had tried everything - patches, gum, lozenges, inhaler, etc. and failed to quit. I literally sobbed in my dr's office last week. On Chantix I feel hopeful. I do not feel more suicidal, for sure. And I have not had the vivid dreams yet because I do not take the night-time pill until tonight.

I'll be fine. I'm a true survivor in so many ways I can't even begin to tell you. :) But again - thank you so much for the concern, concern I really had no right to lay on your laps.

quitting is not easy but it can be done.  I quit almost 15 years ago and the urges are completely gone.  Now I am working on the  weight that I have gained due to medicine I take for a couple of medical conditions.  I am down 15 pounds.    Please don't give up.l

Congrats, Monica, on your quit, and on losing weight as well! Yeah, a lot of meds can cause weight gain, and that's unfortunate. I won't give up if you don't give up! :)

Best of luck to you. God Bless you for your admirable strength and determination. I am a 44 years old who would give anything to kick the habit. But I am petrified of the side effects of Chantix. Stay in touch and keep your chin up.

You go Chris! Quitting smoking is one of the hardest things to do, but the health benifits are incredible!  You have bitten off some heavy duty challenges so remember to care for yourself.  Lucy will help,  she'll remind you to laugh and play and will proudly walk at you side whenever ever you are ready to walk...OK....so you might have to drag her a few times or carry her but she'll love being with you!  GO Girls!

Thanks TLC for the wonderful encouragement! Yes, I know it's hard to quit, I've tried many times, and the longest I've gone is 6 months before a horrible relapse. Lucy is a great help. One thing she is famous for is - for some unknown doggy reason - she always wants to smell my breath whenever I come home frome somewhere. Like "So, just what have you been up to while you were away?" Consequently, I may be able to hide my smoking with perfume and other things from people in general, but THE DOG ALWAYS KNOWS. ha ha ha

Thanks, threepompoms! Oh gosh, don't be frightened of the side effects. Remember, they don't happen as a RULE. They happen for a small precentage of people who take Chantix. And so far *knock wood*, they haven't happened for me. If they do, I will take myself off the med. That's all. If I can do this, I will surely document the whole process (the good, bad, and ugly) right here . . . so you will know ANYBODY can do it. :D
