underweight and pregnant

I've always been underweight, even though I never deprived myself of any food. I've been to doctors, and it just turns out I have a very high metabolism (don't envy me, I'm too skinny and it doesn't suit me). I've even been to a nutritionist to gain weight and that didn't work out. I'm 17 weeks and 4 days pregnant and I am eating like a cow (fruits, veggies, carbs, proteins) and I'm STILL underweight. Even my baby turned out to be slightly underweight during his last echo. To top it off, I'm taking maternal vitamins, fish oil, folic acid, and iron and that's STILL not helping. It's very frustrating because I'm doing more than the best I can and it still isn't enough. My hair is splitting and falling (not clumps falling, but I'm still losing a lot of hair) like I'm nutrient deficient but I'm not. I test myself regularly and I seem to be doing fine. Why on earth are my baby and I so skinny?

Hello,  I am sorry to hear your problem.  Have you asked your OBGYN if you can take a all natural weight gainer.  You can get many different flavors and types.  When I was in my 20's,  I too couldn't gain any weight.  Though I was in the Marine Corps and constantly doing exercise but,  I was taking in so many calories.  A friend of mine told me about the weight gainer,  I used it for a month or so and saw myself gain around 5-7 lbs.

I looked up this site to see if may help you.  If anything just eat snacks and take some type of safe supplement.  Good luck :-)

I agree with Jeff about asking your gyno. What does she say?Does she seem concerned?I would try to drink smoothies with ice cream in the.The fruit will be good for you and ice cream to add calories.

Take Care.

My OBGYN was concerned at first, so she gave me double the dose of maternal vitamins, but later reduced the dose back to normal when the test results showed I had adequate vitamins in my body (even though I had barely gained 2 pounds). I have an appointment with her in 2 weeks to see the baby's gender, I will definitely ask her about weight gainers, although I'm sure she won't be thrilled about giving me any more pills (as I've said earlier, I'm already taking maternal vitamins, fish oil, iron, and folic acid daily). The website you gave me Jeff was quite useful. My husband makes a lot of smoothies for me but adding ice cream sounds like a great idea. If I could also get him to clean the mess he makes in the kitchen, that would be the icing on the cake :) Thanks a lot Jeff and Yvonne :)

I completely understand your concern with the weight gain. When I was pregnant my obgyn was a little concerned for me too. For my total pregnancy I only gained 5 pounds. I was able to wear my normal clothes the entire time.  But as I was told “you don’t get big trees from little trees” meaning ,if you had a weight issue before, even though you are pregnant don’t expect to gain a lot now.  As long as your lil one is still growing and getting everything he/she needs you will both be fine. I would advise to watch your activity, I was always taking walks, and walked a lot at work, and ended up on bed rest for the last 3 months. Also, baby oil can be your best friend. I used it all of the time on my belly. When it itched oil, after shower and bath everything and I did not get 1 stretch mark. Good luck with everything and congratulations

yeah I was always aware that I wouldn't gain much weight, but I was hoping for some good extra pounds. I guess as long as I have the proper vitamins and iron in me, it's not so bad. I just don't want my baby to be as skinny as I am :( Thanks for the oil tip, my Dr. had me rubbing anti-stretch mark creams from the first month. Oil and creams do help with stretch mark, but don't forget you probably didn't get any because you didn't gain much weight. I'm very puzzled to hear about how walking led to your bed rest... I thought walking was supposed to be good for you and will help you with an easier labor. One of my concerns is that I don't walk enough! Anyway thanks for your useful tips, and happy new year :)

Hello! The walking absolutely made delivery faster. This was my first baby and from the first “real” contractions until her arrival was only 6 hours. It sounds like a lot, but for the first few hours I was able to get some sleep then it was time, and she was here in about 15 minutes from the first push. Not long at all. But the reason I ended up on bed rest was because of all the walking it did and how low she was already sitting, it made me start contracting. So I was first in the hospital for about 6 days monitoring the contractions and I was put on a medication to slow them down. After that I was able to go back to work, just not allowed to walk the floor. Well that only worked for about a week and I ended up back in the hospital with worse contractions. So they put my on completely restricted bed rest. So I guess it was one of the “to much of a good thing can be bad” situations. Thank you and happy new year to you and your family.

I guess the bottom line is to do everything in moderation during pregnancy. Thanks for your advice and I wish you the best new year to you and your loved ones :)

Hannah I am glad to hear after your visit that YOU and the baby are doing well.  I hope you have been honest with your DR about anything in family history.  I had my first child at 17 went from 110 up to around 180.  Same with my second child in 81.  What you may gain as healthy weight you can lose it.  If you do need to gain weight even if you don't like it sip on a vanilla milk shake or have a piece of Wisconsin American Cheese if you can get it.  I still eat that for a breakfast to get my calcium as I don't drink milk.  I changed my eating habits during and after pregnancy.  I used to drink a lot of pepsi, hawaiian punch and other sweet things.  I completely cut it out (it takes a while)  but after 28 yrs I am only at 135 lbs not bad from what I started out.

I hope the rest of your pregnancy goes well.  Always talk to your doctor about any concerns you might have.  That is what they are there for.
