School Lunch for Our Kids

Great show on the school lunch program. Yes...yes...   Dr. Sears, way to go! Dr. Lisa, the advertisment is NOT over board. I worked for the State and audited the School Lunch Programs and found that over 90% of the daily menus were full of fats, (both saturated and trans fats), lots of sugar, salt, refined products ect. If a child only ate one hotdog ocassionally perhaps maybe we would not conclude that the school lunch is overall poor.  However with daily choices of the following: hotdogs, pizza, fried chicken nuggets, french fries, and it goes on and on we can concluded that the overall daily choice are too high in fat, animal products, fried foods and sweets, which has been shown to lead to cancer and with obesity on the rise this could also be a cause for early puberty, atherclerosis in two year olds ect....

When a child goes home most parents are not cooking daily, so it's a ride through the drive through, with another healthy choice...right.. Hamburgar, fries  and coke or milk with a kids favorite toy hero packed inside. Most kids don't eat a one order a fries a week, or even one hotdog a week they eat all fried foods and way too much sugar or refined foods.

Today we need to go over board  with true science in all our advertising on TV, because most of the truth isn't on TV it's hidden in books like the China Study, which everyone who thinks they know about nutrition needs to read it.

Great show!

Hi Teresa!
I agree with you.  When I did the Public Health portion of Nutrition clinicals, my classmates and I were stunned about the food choices that schools (especially middle/high schools) had to offer. Nachos, carmel rolls, chips, and other junk food.  What's interesting is that the school definitely offered healthy choices as well (including a salad bar) with colorful fruits and vegetables, etc.  Baked chicken and fish (thankfully not fried).  But the difference is that, it was only a "choice", and next to the salad bar was all the junk food.  And what do teenagers like to eat when they have a choice?  More often than not, they like junk food (as I am sure you have seen time and time again as an RD).  I'm working on obtaining my RD through grad school right now and I can't wait to start the Public Health portion of my clinicals.  I'm living 800 miles (2 States) away from where I grew up and I have a feeling that this area is even worse in their school food habits than my home State.  Thank you for your post!!  Interesting to see and I was happy to see an RD post on here!  Take care.
Amanda
p.s.  do you think this show should have an RD on the show when they are talking about Food/Nutrition?!  Just wondering your thoughts on that since you are an RD.  We were told every single day by the Dietetics Professors that "Doctors are NOT Dieticians".  I just think it would open another positive area, especially when they talk about childhood obesity, etc.
