I was really offended when I actually heard pregorexia mentioned on a show like this. The reason being, is because I am in recovery after a long struggle with anorexia, and I am really confused as to why new terms are being used for an illness that knows no race, gender, or age, etc. boundaries, yet it is being used to describe exactly that when’pregorexia’ or ‘manorexia’ are used. They are the same illness no matter what name you use, and it’s already so hard for people to ask for help or GET help, so to use things like this, seems like it’s just another way to mock the illness. Movies and magazines, even people in the general public, often talk about eating disorders in a joking manner, or they throw the terms around like they are nothing to worry about. I cannot tell you how many times I have heard total strangers talk about someone and how they must be anorexic since they are skinny. First of all, not every person who is thin has an eating disorder, and second of all, if they do have an eating disorder, what gives you the right to talk about them when you most likely don’t even understand it? The one thing I wish people knew about eating disorders, is that they are not a joke. They can exist in anyone you know, no matter what they look like, and they can kill. It isn’t something to joke about and I wish Hollywood especially would grow up and stop using these types of jokes. Eating disorders are not easy to live with, but they are easy to die from. Please educate yourselves on what eating disorders really do and what they are. You never know when someone you love might develop one.
