I’d like to know if this surgery could help me. My lower spine is deteriorating. I have exposed nerves and constant pain. I have trouble standing, sitting, and walking; especially for prolonged periods of time. I regularly herniate my lower lumber vertebrae (approx. every 12-15 mos.), and without doing anything strenous. I cannot lift more than 5-10 pounds. I cannot even carry a basket of laundry up the stairs anymore. Because of the various injections, and medications I have been given for inflammation and pain I have gained approximately 80 pounds in the past 18 months. The extra weight makes my back hurt a lot worse. Currently I use a TENS unit, virtually most of the day, to control the pain. I would love to look into anything that could help me recapture a more normal life.

I am in the same boat as tears.  I have buldging, deteriorating disks in my lower back.  One of them ruptured.  A doctor did surgery and he said that my disk was calcified.  He said it is as hard as concrete.  I am in constant pain, and I like tears, have trouble standing, sitting, and walking.  I have had every kind of treatment you can imagine. I went to the chiropractor for 2 years, went to a pain managment office for 2 years, they did everything from injections(which by the way I have also put on about 100 pounds), to burning the nerves.  Nothing has helped.  This has been going on now for about 12 years.  The pain is unexplainable.  It has robbed me of my joy in life.  I am unable to enjoy my wonderful husband and children.  If this surgery would work for me, it would be an answer to many prayers.  I would never be able to thank God or the doctors enough.  I have forgotten how it feels to not be in pain.

I am so hopeful that there is something out there that could help me. I have no life, whatever health I had is gone. I’m in constant pain. I would love to know if this back surgery could be an option for me. I have had back pain for many years but this last year has been probably the worst. I have always been able to control the pain through massage therapy, anti-inflamatories and physical therapy. but now nothing helps. I have been on morphine and dilaudid since November of this year. I had to give up my job, I’m not able to do anything with my kids. I can’t remember the last time I felt healthy. It seems like it’s just one thing after another with me. I’ve had alot of surgeries. tubes tied, 2 laparoscopies/dnc’ for endometriosis, appendectomy, gallbladder, hysterectomy, ovaries removed, carpal tunnel and DeQuarvain release and now my back has gotten so bad that I can’t do anything. I just want to be healthy and enjoy life, I’m only 33 and I feel like my life is over. I don’t know if this new back surgery would be the answer to my prayers but I’m at my wits end.I don’t know what it’s like to have a normal painfree life. But even if I could have no pain for one day it would be worth it.

I have had two major back surgerys and the dick above the fusion keeps going out. I am fused from L-3 through S-1 and now I can tell there is another dick ruptured or bulging. Is this new procedure available to past back surgery patients.

I watched the new back surgery episode and all the time I wondered if this new procedure would help the 51 yr. old man in my life.  He has jumped through all the “hoops” in order to get some relief for his lower back pain. He has paid a high price tag for various treatments that have releived very little of the constant pain he has experienced over the past 10 years.

He has seen several doctors and no one has suggested any kind of surgery or pain medications.  So, the only treatment he has had is chiropractic and he’s consistently tried back stretching and strengthing exercises.

I can tell he is becoming more depressed from the lack of hope and constant pain.

Can someone please tell me how he can get some help?  Does anyone know how to find a good specialists in the Tulsa Ok. area?

I too have tried what seems like everything. I was even in PT for almost 2 years, and my insureance will no longer cover PT visits. I have opted out of the pain medications because I kept gaining weight that I couldn’t seem to loose, which only increases my pain. I live in Vermont, and have seen three different doctors, including a specialist at a Spine Center. I feel very depressed at my condition, and limited range of movement. I am divorced and raising four active children alone (I have been since 2001), and my limited capabilities make me feel like a bad parent because I can no longer play on the floor, get up of the ground, or run around in the yard with my boys. I desperately want to be more active in their lives, but the pain affects everything I do. I hope someone reviews our posts and can offer information for all of us about the specialists in our areas that can offer this surgery, or other beneficial practices.

Good Luck to All of You!

I am looking for more detailed info about this new back surgery. My sister is in the hospital now suffering from DDD. She is only 52 years old but has been confined to a wheel chair for over 2 years now. She has had several procedures including spinal injections and the burning of nerves in her back. She has taken every pain killer known to man yet here she is still suffering. She wants to have back surgery even though the recovery precess takes a long time. She is still young and really wants to get back to her normal life. If anyone know more about this proceedure please let me know. My email is redcarrera@live.com Thank you in advance for anyone who can help.

I hope that all of you get the pain relief that you need. I am in the same boat as alot of you. I’ve had 2 back surgeries, the second one was unnessary if the doctor would have been paying attention the first time, he missed a piece and left it in my back for 16 days. He even told me that he never misses anything and that it was all in my head. He finally went in again and found the piece and he never spoke to me again from that day on, he just sent me to pain management where I am stuck at now. I’ve gone to 6-8 different doctors and specialist hoping someone could help me, this surgery would be a godsend if it would work on me. I am now walking with a walker w/wheels and a seat cause I have no energy to walk but about 25-30 feet without getting tired. I feel for each and everyone of you all, I know the pain that you are going through. Hopefully all of us will find someone out here to help us. I have lost 2 1/2 inches in height cause I also have the disc degenerating disease (both parents have it), it’s hard to go from 5’8" to 5’5 1/2". But good luck to all of you, you all will be in my prayers.

You can find a Doctor nearest to you who is trained for this technique

by going to www.xlif.com, and type in your zip code.

This is not a list of all doctors who do this type of surgery,

but it is a good place to start.  You can also ask your regular doctor to

recommend one to you, or google something like  “xlif your town (or one of the larger towns near you)”

and you may have some luck there too.

Best of Luck!

I AM LIKE ALL OF YOU AS WELL I HAVE BEEN TO SO MANY DOCTORS AND FINALLY A SPINE SPECIALIST AND I ALSO HAVE DDD AS WELL AS 3 KINDS OF ARTHRITIS AND LUMBOSACRAL SPONDYLOSIS AND I HAVE ALSO HAD THE SHOTS THE BURNING OF THE NERVES, PT AND THE HEAT AND MASSAGE THROUGH PT AS WELL AND STILL HAVE MAJOR PAIN AND LIKE ALL OF YOU I CAN’T DO MUCH OF ANYTHING AND IT JUST TEARS YOUR LIFE UP AND THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE WHO DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT WE ARE GOING THROUGH BECAUSE THEY HAVEN’T HAD TO DEAL WITH IT FOR YEARS AS MOST OF US HAVE. IT AFFECTS EVERY PART OF YOUR LIFE LITERALLY. THERE ARE SOME DAYS I CAN’T EVEN GET OUT OF BED OR TURN OVER IN BED. I ALSO WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE STATS OF THIS NEW PROCEDURE AND IF THERE IS ANYONE WHO HAS HAD IT, IF THEY’VE GOTTEN RELIEF. I DON’T TAKE MANY PAIN MEDS BECAUSE I HAVE HEART PROBLEMS AND LUNG PROBLEMS AS WELL AND HAVE TO BE REALLY CAREFULL BUT I HAVE NOT HAD ANY OF MY DOCTORS TO TALK TO ME ABOUT BACK SURGERY OR ANYTHING, IT’S ALMOST LIKE THEY KNOW WE ARE NOT GONNA GET RELIEF SO WE MUST LIVE THIS WAY AND THEY JUST DON’T WANT TO TELL US. I HAVE BEGUN TO RESIGN MYSELF TO THE FACT THAT I WILL BE LIKE THIS FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. I ALSO HAVE SOME HERNIATED CERVICAL DISCS BUT NOBODY HAS TALKED TO ME ABOUT THAT EITHER. I AM BEGINNING TO WONDER WHAT DOCTORS ARE FOR OTHER THAN SENDING US TO OTHER DOCTORS, WHO SEND US TO EVEN MORE AND SO FORTH AND SO ON. THEY DON’T GIVE US INFORMATION ANYMORE NOR TALK TO US ABOUT OUR PROBLEMS BECAUSE THEY ONLY HAVE 2 MINUTES TO SEE US THEN ON TO THE NEXT PATIENT AND THIS IS WRONG, WE ALL DESERVE TO KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING AND WHAT CAN BE DONE BUT ALOT OF THESE DOCS ARE IN THIS FOR THE MONEY AND NOT TO TRULY HELP THEIR PATIENTS. I DIDN’T GET TO SEE THIS SHOW EITHER SO IF SOMEONE CAN SEND ME SOME INFO ON AT LEAST THE NAME OF THIS NEW PROCEDURE I WOULD TRULY APPRECIATE IT. SEND TO COFFEE121858@BELLSOUTH.NET PLEASE AND MAKE SURE YOU PUT ON THERE THAT IT’S ABOUT THE BACK SURGERY SO I DON’T DELETE IT. GOD BLESS YOU ALL AND I WILL KEEP YOU ALL IN MY PRAYERS AS WELL.

as expected the site offered no doctors on my area. Oh well!

I do know how you feel Tears, I live in a small town in Saskatchewan, Canada and the doctors here are very limited. I have to travel at least 3 hours to see a specialist that I’ll wait for a year to see and probably then it will be a 15 min appointment to tell me there is nothing that they can do. That’s why I’m searching on a states site because whatever the states has for revolutionary new procedures it will be a least 5 years before Canada will even start to look at it. I wish you all the best of luck, hopefully one day we will all be free of pain and get our lives back.

THE ONE DOCTOR THAT DOES THIS SURGERY WITHIN 100 MILES OF ME IS IN TN. BUT I HAVE MS. MEDICAIDE AND I DO NOT IMAGINE THEY WILL IF IT ’S IN TN, WITH MS. MEDICAID AND I READ ON THE SITE THAT the XLIF procedure cannot be performed on the disc between the 5th lumbar and 1st sacral vertebrae. I HAVE ALOT OF PROBLEMS IN THESE AREAS. I ALSO HAVE A SACRAL DISORDER SO I AM NOT SURE THIS WOULD EVEN HELP ME ANY.

Dear Everyone who suffers with spine pain,
I would like to preface this by saying that there is nothing that any of you have gone through that I haven’t gone through myself. I can validate evry single pain, ache, emotion, and despair each of you have felt. I too suffer from spine issues, Severe Chronic Pain from failed back surgery and also Fibromyalgia. I’ve been through two failed spine surgery’s and one reconstructive surgery just to put me back together again after my first surgeon almost left me paralyzed. I was in ICU and in critical condition for 4 days after the 8 & 1/2 hour surgery. The first 4 days were such misery that I didn’t know how I could live though the pain that I was in, and no amount of pain med’s could control it. If I tried to tell you my whole story (which has been going on for over 9 years) it would take way too long. But I will tell you that I am disabled and on SSD and live in severe pain every single minute of my life. I have no quality of life, I haven’t been able to even sleep in a bed for over 8 years. I sleep in a chair sitting up. I’m on a fairly high dosage of Oxycontin but it is not enough to control my pain. My husband has had to take over the cooking, cleaning, shopping, bills, everything as I lay at home almost all of the time. I only get out of the house about 3 times a month and not for very long, then I’m so exhausted that I sleep (what a joke to call it sleeping) for at least 2 days straight. I haven’t actually slept for more than 2 hours tops for the last 9 years. I’ll leave my story at that for now but when I have time I’ll try to post my whole story on my profile page and also give you my email address so you can contact me if you want to vent, talk, anything. I’m in the middle of moving right now (which is terribly difficult) and my Internet will be down for about 3 weeks. I’ll be back though and I hope we can talk and that I can help to guide some of you through the maze of spine options. I’ve been through so many of them. I’m a pro at this! In the meantime I’ll be thinking of all of you and sending mental strength to help you get through each day.
Sincerely,
ScarlettO

Hi Again!
I wanted to tell all of you that I think this technique is brilliant! If you haven’t been through back surgery yet you have no idea the problems that the ‘traditional’ type of surgery can cause such as, scar tissue causing impingement on a nerve root (I have a few at least that are completely squeezed off and is agony), loss of muscle from having them cut (especially if they go through the stomache, again which I’ve been through), recovery time, etc.. Also, if you have the choice have cadever bone transferred instead of your own pelvis, (the pain from that can stay with you for life, like with me) and the recovery time lasted me a year, massive blood loss and tranfusions,etc.. There are so many benefits from this type of procedure I wish I could have had this instead of traditional surgery. And yes, this can be used for DDD, I looked it up right after the show because my brother needs to have surgery for DDD.

TEARS

I went to www.xlif.com and typed in 05065 for the zip code and it

looks like there are three surgeons in Connecticut that are trained for this.

Like me, you would have to travel some.  The nearest Dr. is in San Fancisco for

me, approx. 375 miles.

There are probably more, if you start searching.  Or ask your doctor to refer you to one.

I wish you luck!

It should never matter how far you have to travel to find the right doctor who won’t screw your back up for life. I made the huge mistake of using a local surgeon for my first 2 surgery’s and what she did to me was in fact malpractice in it’s truest form. When I traveled to Phoenix the ‘new’ surgeon called all of the other specialist in just to show them what had been done to me. My husband and I were in the next room and could overhear them, they said things like “Oh my God, who did that to her?” and “Her spine is obliterated!”, etc., they were in complete shock and had never seen anything like this. As I mentioned in my novel above, I had to have reconstructive surgeruy which left me fighting for my life. The piece that my first surgeon had put in during my fusion (which I never needed in the first place) was coming out, almost completely out. It was just a matter of time before I would have been paralyzed. As it was, my lower spine was no longer connected to the rest of my spine and I could feel it, it felt like I was in two pieces, wobbly, very weird and hard to explain. Yes, it is more expensive to have to go out of town but believe me, you’re talking about the rest of your life. Please, please find the best spine surgeon possible and don’t settle for less. I’ll tell you more when I can, I have to sit on the sofa for awhile since sitting at my desk hurts me too badly. Please, don’t turn out like me!
