Dr. Lisa-
Before I had a partial hysterectomy 3 years ago, I had no problems with lubrication during sexual intercourse. Since then, I do. Although I am very aroused by my partner; I ‘dry’ up down there. Is this normal? We’ve tried different lubricants, they either burn inside or get tacky quickly- not to mention the mess.
Any suggestions?

Well you both are probably much younger than me..LOLBUT I had a hysterectomy when I was 35, Im 54 now, I just went to my GYN and she told me I had atrophic vaginitis, basically due to lack of estrogen, my vaginal area has dried up. I have been afraid to have sex for so long due to the pain. She gave me an Rx for Lidocaine jelly which will numb me, great, I can have sex but not feel anything??? Have you tried Astroglide? That seems to be the best lubricant for me, but KY also has ovules/beads to use for vaginal dryness I have not tried those yet, which is supposed to last for a couple of days. The main thing is the hormones, most of the time they can give you vaginal estrogen cream to use, or hormones, but they would not me, because I have had 5 blood clots, so they told me to forget that, so I have taken it upon myself to buy natural estrogen cream and natural progesterone cream to put on topically. I had been using the progesterone because it was great for hot flashes. But Im still dry inside…Im going to see her tomorrow, so I will see what she has to say when she does the pelvic what it looks like now after using the topical estrogen…I’m a nurse I don’t work anymore because I have a chronic illness, but try ASTROGLIDE if you have not tried anything else, and look at the KY vaginal lubricating beads or ovules, they are not just for sex, but to help you stay lubricated also.

http://www.k-y.co.nz/faq.asp that is a great site with lots of questions answered…
here is the site for
the KY LIQUIDBEADS for lubrication:

Also if you are going to buy astroglide you can get it on EBAY probably cheaper, that is where I got mine, and if your looking for something to increase your arousal I have heard that Durex Play Utopia is the best, I have bought some but not used it, got it at a Rite Aide Drug store…
Hope this helps….I know how you feel!!!

Well Ladies, I told you I was going back to my GYN doctor, I had been using the topical estrogen and topical progesterone which I had always used it was great for hot flashes, and I wanted to see if it had any affect on my vaginal drying due to lack of estrogen..NOPE..she put the speculum in the there and just the touch of the q tip hurt so bad,she told me I was VERY INFLAMED from lack of estrogen, and I told her what my vascular surgeon said about my veins and valves and she finally consented to give me vaginal estrogen cream, but told me it would take 3 months to work..she did not even use her hand to do a bimanual exam, she said it was that bad. I told her that Im only 54 and I would like to have sex, before I die, and I can’t like this. its too painful. She had suggested in the past to use the jelly and use a vibrator to see how it feels, I told her the tiny vibrator was fine, but when I went a size up, I could not do it, it was too painful, and this was the size probably two sizes smaller than a man’s penis. I said I know I can have an orgasm at least now, but I still could not insert the larger one inside it was just too painful. Doc Johnson makes very good ones, well known and so does Dr. Berman, hers may be under Berman. Look on Ebay if you are looking for one, much cheaper if you bid right. Of course theya are all brand new. I had to wait till my husband came home from work, take the dog off the bed, shut my door, and go in the kitchen to talk to my 85y/o mom for me to have private time. We live with my mom after my dad passed away.
For you younger ladies out there, I would ask my doctor’s to check my hormone levels, especially if you are not in menopause or just starting, and check your thyroid too. Im hypothryroid and that can make a difference. They can check your levels of estrogen and progesterone and testosterone, which some times they give women to increase their libido, but it has side effects like facial hair etc. The dryness is usually a side effect of your hormone levels etc. I was on hormones by mouth until I had my second blood clot, and I told the doctor, UH don’t you think I should stop these???? Progesterone cream was the only thing that would stop my hot flashes and I used that topically. You can buy them over the internet, or even Amazon.com…Good Luck ladies…Hope it helps…

I am so glad to see someone talking about this issue. I had a complete hysterectomy when I was 47 and I am now 54. I have had terrible hot flases and developed atrophic vaginitis. No one ever told me this could happen after a hysterectomy. No vaginal sex for me and I feel very cheated. My husband is very unhappy and he hasn’t cheated on me but it has really affected our relationship. I had severe endometrosis and the surgeon decided to take out my ovaries. I went in for a partial hysterectomy due to fibroids. The fibroids were positioned in an area which cause them to press on my bladder and made sex painful. How ironic that the hysterecomy made sex not only extremely painful but impossible! I use vaginal estogen to keep me from being so dry that I bleed when I wipe after I pee. I also use progesterone cream and I have hypothyroiditis. I think more should be said about this. My mother and one of my sisters have their ovaries and went through menopause with very few symptoms but my other sister and I had complete hysterectomies and have had a very hard time. Neither of us had a problem with our ovaries. The doctors thought since we were both close to menopause why not take the ovaries out. I wish I would have known about this.
