If we can figure out what causes drug addiction maybe we can figure out a way to stop it. We need a society where people don’t feel the need to do drugs.
I think the most overlooked factor is the home environment that a child is raised in. If someone’s parents are constantly fighting,arguing,nagging,name-calling or making cutting comments about each other this will affect the child. It is my belief those conditions lead to addiction. Having parents that are meddling, domineering or overbearing in a childs life lead to a child with low self esteem. It is my belief low self esteem leads to addiction. Adddiction is a sympton, not a cause,of a problem. Fixing society starts with fixing the home, in my opinion.

I agree with you on this topic. All you need is a weak mind and the willingness to try something to get adicted. The home and morals of todays society need to be fixed.

I agree with both of you for the most part. Our son is an active addict. There was no arguing, fighting, etc. in our houseehold. But, we were not educated as to what to look for. I had no idea what huffing was back then. Our son went through 3 months of rehab at 15, but he didn’t want to be there so it was all wasted time and money. He’d had several arrests for minor things. But, he did finally end up in prison. He actually spent his 21st b-day in prison. After he got out, he was clean for almost a year but he started hanging with the same old croud. He trys to stay clean, and has done so for a couple of months at a time. But, he doesn’t have any kind of support network in place so he’s just setting him up to fail again.
Over the years, I’ve talked with experts, families who have gone through addiction of a family members, be a member of Al-Anon… I know that environment does play a part in addiction, that heredity is also in the equation…. but no one knows exactly what causes addition.

I believe some excellent points have been made. There is a lot misconception in our society regarding drug addiction and what causes drug abuse. I personally accepted the biopsychosocial theory of addiction. Although some or all of these factors influence addiction they will do so at varying degrees. I do believe that some people are genetically more sensitive to addictive behaviour because of an increase activity in the addiciton center of the brain. The psychological well being of person is also a key factor stemming from anything like low self esteem, depression or the need to escape reality in order to avoid facing something in ones life. The third aspect of this theory centers around ‘social engagement’ that is the relationship we have with the people in our lives and our enviroment. For example peer pressure, problems within and outside of the home and the media’s glamorization of drugs and alocohol. I would hate for anyone to limit their point of view to only believing that a young person’s abuse of drugs stems from a low cohesion within their family. A drug addict may have come from a loving home with great parents but still end up on drugs.

addiction is the sole responsibility of the individual..
some fall under this category due to stress and family problems.
