This is in response to the guest on the show this week Dr. Deborah Sarnoff who was talking about Melanoma. People, do not be scared of the sun. Saying the sun is bad for you and causes cancer is very misleading and could lead to other diseases and illnesses. It is like saying vitamins and minerals are bad for you and can kill you. Its like saying drinking water can kill you. Its like saying drinking a glass of wine or beer will make you an alcoholic and kill you.
People the Sun is not bad for you, the sun does not cause cancer. ABUSE is the word that needs to get out there. ABUSE of anything is not good for you. Abuse of the sun, yes is not good for you, ABUSE of the sun can cause cancer. Abuse of alcohol can kill you. Abuse of a vitamin or mineral can kill you, Abuse of water can kill you. Abuse of anything can kill you.
I’m Tired of these doctors saying don't go out in the sun, don't let the sun touch your skin, don't let the sun get in your eyes. There are two reasons why there is life on earth, that is because of water and guess what, the sun. Without the sun there would be no life on earth. Without the sun you would die. All life on earth revolves around the suns energy.
you are doing more damage to your body by using toxic sun blocks and avoiding the sun. The sun is very important in ensuring your daily dose of Vitamin D. Your body makes a special form of Vitamin D that your body needs to be healthy. Vitamin D deficiencies are linked to such diseases as Multiple Sclerosis. In populations that live in areas of the world that have long winters and short summers, the number of people with multiple sclerosis is extremely higher that those of hot sunny regions where MS is very rare. To add to a vitamin D deficiency, when using sun blocks you are introducing tons of toxic and harmful foreign chemicals into your body. What every you put on your skin can be absorbed into your blood stream. So by putting on these chemicals every day to avoid the sun is doing much more harm than letting your body absorb the life giving energy of the sun.
Now with that said don't go running outside naked in the middle of the day lathered in oil to bake for 2 hours. That is Abuse and yes will harm you. You just have to be smart. everyone needs at least 10 -15 min of sun on a large portion of their body every day. Try to get this sun in the mornings or the evenings when the rays of the sun are not as strong. If you are an extremely white person then 10 - 15 mins is all your really going to need. The darker your skin the longer you need to be in the sun. Dark skin pigment is a natural sun block. That is why Africans and people in tropical countries have very dark skin. They have evolved to live a life in extreme sunlight. very dark people should never use sun block. They do not need it. For a very dark person to get their vitamin D they need to be in the sun a long time. For the lighter skinned people once you have had your daily sun, then by all means cover up a little and put some sun block on, BUT not just any sun block. Buy your sun block from a health food type store where they will carry more safe and less toxic sun block options. We already fill our bodies with so many toxic chemicals and known carcinogens every single day. They are in the air we breath, the water we drink, the additives and preservatives in processed food, the cleaning supplies, cosmetics, the pesticides and fertilizers etc. We don't need any more of this junk in our bodies because some so called doctor who is suppose to be intelligent tells everyone to hide from the essential life giving sun and lather yourself in toxic carcinogenic chemicals.

I THINK WHAT THE DR'S MEAN ISNT NOT TO GO OUT IN THE SUN JUST TAKE PERCAUTIONS.I DID GO OUT INTO THE SUN AND I HAVE SUN DAMAGE FROM IT.SO WHAT I THINK THEY ARE SAYING IS TO BE CAREFUL.OUT IN THE SUN.BECAUSE TO MUCH SUN IS VERY BAD,I CANT GO OUT INTO THE SUN NOW LIKE I USED TO.WHIHC IS TOO BAD.BECAUSE IM ONE WHO LOVES BEING OUT IN THE SUN.BUT NOW THAT I DID AND WAS OUT IN IT TOO LONG I CANT DO IT ANYMORE..AND SUNBLOCK ISNT BAD FOR YOU.IT HELP YOU NOT TO BURN LIKE I DO.ALL I HAVE TO BE OUT IN THE SUN FOR NOW IS ABOUT 5 MINS.AND I LOOK LIKE A LOBSTER.5 MINS.AND IM COOKED.
Ummmm..... actually the suns rays can cause serious damage. Going out in the sun is good for you, with the proper precautions; sunscreen, hat, long sleeves, etc. And I have to say the sun block from the health food stores do not work at all, at least on me.
I have had melanoma and I TOTALLY agree with you. I also had rickets as a child which is another symptom of vitamin D DEFICIENCY! I now try to get some sun on nice days and take 2,000 to 4,000 mg. of Vitamin D a day. You are very informed on this subject. Thank you for writing. I cannot add anything to what you said. Good job! Thank you for caring enough to write. I wish I had known this years ago!!
Thank you! Great post, I'm tired of people bashing the sun and avoiding it. The sun in moderation is okay for the skin. Baking your skin is not, we all have limits, the point is not to push it.
It's different for everybody. You wouldn't tell a smoker with lung cancer that smoking doesn't cause cancer. Some people can smoke all their lives and not get cancer. I have a family friend who has spent her whole life with a beautiful deep dark tan and she's a smooth skinned 76 year old women. But I grew up by a pool in Florida and had my first skin cancer diagnosis when I was 18.
My skin is extremely sensitive to the sun, partly caused by growing up in the Florida sun. Since I moved back to the south last year, I have gained about 20 new moles/keratoses/basal cell growths from minimal sun exposure (I don't "lay out" and I usually wear sunscreen and hats when I am exposed to the sun for more than 10 minutes at a time).
My point is that everybody's skin is different and everbody reacts differently to outside stimuli. But the sun is very damaging and it's affects should not be taken lightly by anyone!
We all need to be careful of carefully crafted marketing campaigns driven by the need for financial gains. We are being scared our of the sun by The American Academy fo Dermatologists (AAD) campaign to drive more people into dermatology offices. They are funding this campaign by "donations" from the cosmetic industry. The dermatologists and sunblock manufacturers have seen record profits from trying to make us less dependant on the sun and more dependant on spending money with them.
Skin cancer rates have been artificially elevated by the AAD and the Skin Cancer Foundation (SCF). There is absolutely no way the USA can have over 50% of the world's skin cancer rates. It is a statistical impossibility.
Rates are being elevated a couple ways:
-cosmetic dermatologists calling non skin cancer moles and skin tags skin cancer to pad bills. Calling a mole removal, which is a cosmetic procedure, skin cancer will enable the client to collect insurance. This is insurance fraud and artificially elevates skin cancer rates. This procedure is encouraged by the AAD to satisfy their sponsors (the cosmetic industry).
-The AAD and SCF sending out skin cancer screening vans and setting up skin cancer screenings in various areas. This again artificaially elevates skin cancer rates and scares people into the dermatologists offices. It is a brilliant marketing strategy but one we can not buy into.
Everyone has different skin types. If you are fair and from northern Europe or Asia. Expose yourself minimally. Your skin did not evolve in direct sunlight. If you are of Meditteranean, Asian or African descent, espose yourself more. Be smart and do what comes naturally.
Don't fall for the HYPE!!!
