Just to Touch up on the Heating Air Conditioning and ventilation systems. What is it? Well The Hvac system is a big vaccum; Recycling air. When you get sick the germs and bacteria are sucked through the system. A normal filter only captures 15% of particles. Most of the bacteria end up in the coil where it sits and breeds. during the winter we heat the germs and in the summer we refreeze them. its is important not only to change your filter but have a technician clean the coil and kill the germs. Also NintyPercent of Homes Have leaks of 15-30 percent. Due to poor instalation You are losing Energy Not to mention how much Insulation and particles fummigation from the attic you are allowing in with this loss. Also Homes built before 68 most likely have asbestos ducts this is a big problem with all the air loss and recycling. The silent killer is the heat exchanger normally good for 20+ years. When they crack The Gas is no longer in a sealed compartment as it burns the fan kicks on blowing air through your Furnace mixing in the carbon monoxide.Chief complaints you wake up with a headache, feel like you need to open a window to get some air. there is a lot of info Consumers dont know. make sure when you choose your technician and company that they are trained in air quailty and not just slaping equipment in.
A uv light wholesales for 250$ THe light actually kills 99% of bacteria when mounted above the coil. Replace ducts 15 years you wont believe the crap people are breathing. Also Do not fall for the scams Duct cleaning. If running air through the duct is supposed to clean it why wouldnt your fan clean it. dust dirt and everything else build up in layers and its impossible to clean without causing more problems. A coil cleaning runs 500$ a blowering cleaning cost 300 to 500$. Its so simple less than 30 minutes of work ask for a package price blower, coil and duct seals.
Another Thing Animals Like to lay where the air is sucked in. Animal hair contains Animal Dander: Which is a living organism. Also frequently vaccum your Return. Porter sep is a 7 yr solution to mold concerns.

Part of my home was built in 1898 part in 1968 and part in 1972! the 1898 Home is actually "inside" this home! I always thought that was cool but now I wonder what lurks in the walls and old subfloors ceiling and etc. I don't know if it ever had ducts in this house or not,...I bought it after the recent renovations here in 2008 Each room has it's own electric baseboard heat. If I get my son or someone to crawl around and look if there is any old ducting,...should I have him pull it or just forget it because it isn't in use anymore? Thanks for the info! Clearly,...Crystal
Hello SLC
I just wanted to say thanks 4 reading. I have worked in The Hvac field for over 10 yrs. pulling out old air ducts that serve no purpose. Well attic, basements are full of dust and insulation tiny particles. depending on the ducts its either fiberglass, Sheet metal wraped with asbestos or spiral silver jacket ducting. If its asbestos wraped have it removed Here in california a Abatement will run you 700 for up to 50 linear feet. Its important to call a professional. Asbestos is hook shaped so when it becomes airbourne and you breathe it the asbestos hooks on to your lungs and wont let go. Another thing it also gets into the fabric of your clothing Where it gets introduced to the rest of the family.
The fiberglass ducting is also pretty nasty. Most people with this duct complain of breathing problems and dusty houses. The duct is just one big piece of spiral fiberglass. after the yrs of use dirt dust and fiberglass this duct goes from a salmon color to a black . Sometimes you even see black around the registers. Silver jacket R.6 Duct I see no problems with this Duct other than improper installation. rated for 20 yrs it plastic with a wire inside the shell is wrapped with 6 inches of insulattion.
In a sealed House just leave it there pulling it out will create more dust and more than likely make him sick.
