Kathy the good thing is you caught this problem before it got to bad. Good luck.

I am 42 years old. I had knee replacement 3 years ago. I also had bone spurs and severe pain. I was told that alot of the pain was due to the bone bleeding. I was scared. After being told I needed knee replacement it took me about a year to finally say yes to the surgery. I got to the point of walking with a knee brace and then to the point I could not walk at all. Shots did not work nor did pain medication. The surgery was not as bad as I feared. I was given an epi-deral and twilight medicine and off the dr. went to operating. I was scared that I would wake up and hear them cutting on my knee but that did not happen. The next day the nurses had me up and walking on a walker and doing exercises. By day 3, I was out of the hospital. 8 weeks out of work. I had a set back though. 12 weeks into recovery, i had too much build up of scar tissue and the dr had to put me to sleep and just move my leg back and forth and around to crunch up the scar tissue. 2-3% of patients have to go back and have this done. Because I was so young my body produced more collagen which contributed to the build up of scar tissue. The physical therapy is the hardest but you must do the therapy. I am told my knee will last 15-20 years. Only 2 knee replacements can be performed.
Know I need my other knee replaced. I am just waiting until I can't take the pain anymore. My dr told me, I would be back when I could not handle the painful walking. He was right. Nothing to be scared of.
