I love Jillian's compassion for others, I love watching her show others compassion. I have not watched "The Doctors Show" until yesterday and I watched it again today. I will watch it again, in fact I have programed my DVR so that if I am unable to watch it at the time that is scheduled, then at least I won't miss a show.
I do want to add my 2 cents in regards to the what food stamps should allow for purchase and what it shouldn't allow.
Before the goverment goes after those dependent on foodstamps, they need to go after the manufacturers of the high fat, high sugary, high bad cholesteral ingredients they put in their products. My family relies on foodstamps for our monthly alloutment of food.
The only foods we can afford are the foods that are very bad for us, such as hot dogs, frozen pizzas (for an off brand 8" frozen pizza is only $1)..to make a healthier pizza will cost my family more and we would have to rely on the food banks, which if you were to go under cover to one of those places, you would be shocked at what they give away...there is one in Petoskey, Michigan which gives away donuts, cakes, pies, and cookies as much as the consumers wants, and they do this twice a month...go undercover to some of these and learn the truth about them.
I raised my two sons on foods such as frozen pizzas, hot dogs, canned pastas, etc. and yes they are very morbidly obese, I too am obese. We have a life time of all these foods with all their process chemicals flowing threw our veins and to all of a sudden to remove these processed and highly artificly chemical laced foods would be like removing all cigarrets, alcohol, and illegal drugs from the face of the earth.
What do you think happens to smokers if they are force to quit cold turkey, or alcholics have to quit cold turkey, or drug abusers were forced to quit cold turkey?
Do think forcing those on foodstamps to all of a suddent have to stop purchasing the highly bad for you foods will solve the obesity problem? Gym and recess was taken away from the schools.
Before going after consumers who rely on foodstamps for the only food they can afford with them, try making the healthier choices more affordable then the unhealthy foods?
It is cheaper buying frozen pizza then it is to make it yourself, it is cheaper to buy a hamburger from the McDonald's $1 menu then it is to buy the ingredients to make a healthier hamburger and then the consumers who rely on foodstamps would run out of foodstamps before the month is over, then what?
Little Caesar sells a 1 topping pizza for $5, Chef Boyardee advertises that each can has a full serving of vegetables? V8 juice advertises that you can drink your vegetables that tastes like fruit juice?
In truth, eating fresh vegetables is very scary. Look at the problems, spinach, lettuce, now cantalope....what are we suppose to eat? It is safer eating a Snickers bar then it is to eat a fresh cantalope.
Obesity is a very large problem, so are drug problems, alcohol problems, gamblers, etc...
This world will never be perfect. If we don't die from obesity, we die from a drunk driver, or we die from a shoot out over drugs or gambling, or we die from cancer.
Which would be better to die from?
The solution is not giving more in foodstamps, nor is it figuring out what consumers can purchase with foodstamps. The solution is creating more jobs. Jobs that will hire you even if you have been out of work more then two years and don't have a college degree. Jobs that will pay you enough where you can afford healthier food choices, as well as a fitness trainer or fitness gym membership.
Right now the only jobs available are jobs at fast food places, and even working for the fast food places consumers still need assistance from foodstamps.

Excuses, excuses, excuses. Although a lot of "healthier" food is more expensive, it doesn't mean you can't make "healthy" meals on the same budget. Give me a break. It will take time and effort, but it could be a good experience for the family to learn how to make meals that are healthy. And keep in mind portion control - there are lots of recipes shown on other tv shows and the internet that break down the cost per person - it's not much more than a trip to McDonald's.
You can always say NO to donuts, cakes, cookies, etc. - they do absolutely nothing for you nutrition-wise. Just because they are free doesn't mean you should eat them.
Your quote: It is safer eating a Snickers bar then it is to eat a fresh cantalope. Seriously?? This is the problem with our overweight society. There is always an excuse to eat unhealthy foods - cheap and convenient.
As for a job that gives you everything - not gonna happen. Take some initiative and figure out how to make it work - you don't need a trainer or even a gym membership. Start walking, then turn that into running. If you don't have weights, use soup cans or containers filled with sand. There is no excuse to not get healthy!
This is what's wrong with this country. People always want to blame their problems on someone else, or the government. You can AND SHOULD take control of your life, what you eat, how healthy you are. If you need to eat at McDonald's, skip the greasy burger and fries and eat a chicken sandwich or salad. It really isn't rocket science people. Stop blaming others, stop expecting others to pay for you, and get off your butt and take care of business!
@hamtje, it is not all as simple as you think it is. Junk food is just as hard to break free from as drug addicts to free themselves from their drugs. For 1 thing, I don't have the support. I don't have anyone in my corner or my two son's corner. It is just me. I don't have friends, family who care. I do agree with you that it is a portion control issue, how do you break free from the over size portion without feeling starved? For me, it is easy because I fill that hunger gap with ice water. My two adult sons are a different story. They seem me as a liar, they see everything these "tv shows who teach meals on a budgt as liars". I have nobody to back me up. It is me fighting with my two sons to change, and they will not believe what the see on t.v., nor will the believe what they hear from.
Yes, I can say no...drug addicts can say no to drugs, alcoholics can say no.....but it is way too hard to say no on my own....I don't have support.
I am not asking for a job to give my everything...I am asking for a job that will return my diginty to me. One that will pay me more then $12,000 a year. A job that pays me at least $25,000 a year, so that I can pay my own way and have self respect. I do need a trainer, I need the support. But like you said (hamptje, I know reality, and I know it will never happen....).
Not everyone has support. For my family it is just the three of us. It is me trying to push two grown men the size of two boulders.
I do have an addiction to the chemicals they add to processed foods
One thing to add is that since when was McDonalds covered by food stamps? I realize it can be less expensive there, but that shouldn't even be in the conversation because you are talking about food stamps.
Melilssa.
@melissaw72 in Michigan, you can use Foodstamps at Mcdonalds.
I want to comment on the fact that you like to watch Jillian. From your post you are new to the Doctors. If you'd had watched it like most of us have, prior to her. You may have a different oppinion on watching her on the Doctors. Especially, since she is not a Dr. She needs to leave the Doctors.
You can buy a bag of potatos or a bag of flour for alot cheaper than a $1 1 serving 8" pizza. You can also buy a whole case of chicken breasts to make meals that end up being cheaper than any frozen, pre-made food or $5 LIttle Ceasers pizza.
I am a front end manager at a grocery story and can tell you for a fact that you can make meals way cheaper than you can buy pre-made ones. I honestly think its just plain lazyness making boxed meals.
The people that I witness using foodstamps, more often than not, are buying chips and pop and boxed meals. Its fine to treat yourself occasionaly, but to use the entire amount for that kind of food?
For $100 you can buy so many bags of potatoes or carrots, fresh veggies and fruit, rice, bread, flour and all kinds of meat! There is no reason you can't be stocked up on meat either. There are plently of cheap cuts of meat that can fit into a tight budget.
I am currently on mat leave and am earning $800 less a month, and so far keeping my head above water, while not sacrificing what I am eating!
@rclay, I have only watched the show for the first time this week, and I thought Jilian Michaels was really good on the show. I am use to her being really tough with compassion on "The Biggest Loser". I realize she is not a Doctor, but the producers put her on the show for a reason. I liked Jillian Michaels compassion she showed from what I have seen so far. I will continue to watch this show.
@dimples78, it would have to be proven and I would need to learn tricks to teach my grown sons on how to fight the hungry feeling. There is still a portion control issue, and the addiction to the junk is real. I know myself I get real moody, cranky, and even shakes when I go through a junk withdrawl..then depression sinks in, same with my two guys. There is also a strong need for support, I cannot fight this alone, and I cannot push my two boulder size grown men. I wish I could just kick them both out, but they would just end up homeless. We need an intervention.
@cawill62, believe me, I know it's not easy. It takes lots and lots and lots of willpower!!!! BUT, it is doable. @dimples78 has some good points. You need to push yourself to try to change your eating habits for a couple weeks...it should get easier. I used to drink lots of diet soda, and then I started an exercise program and told myself I would try to stop drinking it. And I did for 3 months...now I allow myself a treat of diet soda every once in a while. As for bad food, once you get away from it, you won't want to go back. You will feel so much better, physically and mentally. I now look at that sort of food and just think to myself, "That will do absolutely nothing to make my body better"...and I'm not just talking about the outside. I used to eat junk, chips, corn dogs, etc...I can't even eat that stuff now without getting a stomach ache.
You need to realize that all that CRAP you are eating is only hurting you and your sons. Only YOU have the power to change YOU. And that comes with the willpower within. Trust me, once you start eating better, you will feel SO much better.
Also, if you start eating better, you won't feel like you are starving. All of that crap that you are putting into your body doesn't provide your body with what it needs, and you end up still feeling hungry. But if you fill yourself with healthy foods, fruits, veggies, whole grains, etc., you should start to feel better and won't crave the junk food that does nothing for you.
It's doable. Don't say "can't" or "never". You can do it! The job thing is tough. But put your mind to it and you can make it happen. Maybe start by taking small steps. Swap out one unhealthy meal, like breakfast, and try to have something good. Try eggs and yogurt, something filling with protein to keep you feeling fuller throughout the day.
@hamtje, I go round and round with my two sons. I am exhausted with fighting them and I cannot fight them by myself. I have lost weight, I have lost about 96 lbs. while my two sons have gained weight and continue to gain weight. I about 100 lbs. more weight to lose before I can feel healthier, however, I am having a hard time continuing my weightloss while my two sons are gaining and not listening to me. We are survivors of domestic violence, and we have over come big hardship obsticles such as homelessness, and I cannot push them anymore on my own. Like I said we are truly without support of an extended family, we have no friends. My youngest son is 18 years old, dropped out of high school because of the bullies harrassing him about his weight. He is only 18 years old and weighs over 368 lbs. and his older brother is almost the same, and both are pushing back hard against me. I need help, they need help, they both need an intervention. I cannot bring myself to kick them out of my house, because they would just end up being homeless again. They spent their childhood homeless, I cannot let them become homeless adults. I cannot and refuse to kick them out, especially with their morbid obesity problem.
You're fan of Jillian cawill62, which is why you started watching the show. We are fans of the Dr's and thought the show was fine without her. If you watched the show before, you would understand what we're talking about. There was no screaming on the show before...it was just four great Drs giving out medical advice and having a good time doing it. Now the Drs can barely get a word in because of her big mouth and you can feel the tension on the set. Jillian should have been given her own show and not given this show to ruin.
This is suppose to be a show of doctors. Get rid of Jillian!
Yeah, this might open the door to a big balck hole of things.... I do not know what the solution should be but I can tell you that I get very frustrated when I see people I know that will take any "free help" they can as they drive to their doctor for their breast augmentation in a brand new expensive vehicle while talking on their latest and greatest phones, in their new wardrobe after getting back from vacation etc... I'm not saying people shouldn't be able to have nice things or they can't save for whatever splurges they want. By the time I pay my health care premiums and taxes, etc... I decide on a modest lifestyle so that I can have a retirment some day and the future I want. I'm not jealous...just seems there are people who need the help and then some that take advantage of it that ruin the system for everyone. Again, not trying to start a war here... just venting.
The ONLY time she has ever shown ANY compassion was for the woman who was on with cancer. Every other show, she is screaming at, or over everyone else. She is not a Dr. She doesn't deserve to be a regular on the show. I truly think as you watch the show more, you will see her real colors come through.
