I was very dissatisfied with the mere mention of cluster headaches on today's show. The main focus was on migraine headaches. I understand migraines are more common, but they are certainly not the most painful.
Cluster headaches are very severe and most people do not understand anything about them. In fact, most folks who have been diagnosed with clusters go mis-diagnosed for years because the doctors/treatments they receive are incorrect. The first "conclusion" that is made in alot of cases is migraines.
Cluster headaches are nicknamed 'suicide headaches' due to the severe pain. I have written to the Producers of the show because I would like to see more information on clusters made public. Again, there are ALOT of doctors who are not familiar with these headaches and can mis-diagnose patients for years. I honestly believe this is something that should be taught in all medical schools.
It was stated on todays show that Cluster headaches are easily treatable in the ER by using Oxygen. This can be untrue. Oxygen can be a 'quick fix' for some sufferers, but it does not work for everyone. There are many self remedies out there to ease the pain and these remedies are anything the sufferer can do to stop the pain. As far as I know, there is no known cause for cluster headaches and there is no cure. There are alot of medications that can be used (I use Verapamil), but again, once an 'ache' is in full force - we will do anything to make it stop.
I would like to see more information aired on Cluster Headaches and (if anyone has time these days) more folks educating themselves on the subject.

My daughter was diagnosed with cluster headaches and after running across a blog from someone who's child had a sensitivity to Red Dye #40 we decided to avoid it & see what happened. Her headaches all but disappeared!! Occasionally she does get one but it is very mild and usually because she ate a little of something with the dye in it before asking the ingrediants! It has been nothing short of miraculous for her!
