Excuse me!

I'm sorry if I'm speaking out of turn here, but I felt insulted by Dr. Travis when he gave his doctor's orders yesterday! I did not appreciate it when he said we need to embrace these "special" kids. The correct way of saying it would have been, "We need to embrace these kids." For one thing, every kid should be embraced, regardless of their needs. Also, I resent the word "special" because it is a label used to single out. We are not special; we have special needs!"

Awailbridge I am sure the doc did not mean to hurt or judge anyone with special needs. And you are so right about everyone needs to be embraced. Thank you for pointing this out there will be many who read this and now will know what to use. Myself I beleive everyone is Special and I beleive everyone has Special needs even if not diagnosed in a Doctors office. So Thanks again and please keep posting.

This is my opinion....everyone is "special"...whether they are a special needs person are whether they are not.  The doctor is a kind spirited person "a special person" if you will !!!!!!!!!

I know, I felt it was the wrong way to state it. For one, everyone is "special" in the sense that we're all different and contribute something to the world, and disabled people are no more "special" than anyone else, their needs are just different. And I mentioned to my mother who was watching with me that all kids need to be embraced, and she mentioned that maybe not all children make the world a better place. Which, I felt pretty sucky, because my sister is special needs, and my mother saying that makes me feel like they favor her, which they probably do. But anyway, I thought her could've stated that differently as well.

Namaste wow I can not beleive a person would have said that all children do not make a difference in life. I know a couple of disabled people and they have made a very big difference in a lot of peoples lives. And every child and every adult makes this place a better place to live. It does not mean that someone needs to find a cure for something,or make a million dollars. Just a smile,a hug ,or a kind word can make such a big difference in this world. So as long as we all keep trying to reach out and be the best we can be we make a difference.  HERE IS A BIG EMBRACE FOR YOU. AND IF YOU EVER NEED ANOTHER LEAVE ME A POST.
