How to Prevent Muscle Loss

From the time we’re born our muscles are growing stronger. But in our 40’s we begin to lose muscle mass and function. Getting sick or having a chronic disease can accelerate a person’s muscle loss.

When muscle loss becomes too great, it can make everyday tasks like walking or climbing stairs even more difficult.

What can we do about it?

  • If you don’t exercise…Start!
  • If you already do...try exercises that increase muscle strength and endurance like resistance and strength training.
  • Don’t overdo it! Work with an experienced physical therapist or trainer to develop an exercise plan that’s right for you.
  • And don’t skimp on protein! Add high quality protein like meat or soy-based foods throughout the day.  You can also try a complete balanced nutrition shake.

If you or someone you know is experiencing muscle loss, see your healthcare physician.
