Amy first joined The Doctors in March 2014, when she described how she became partially paralyzed after heroically serving as a human shield to protect her two children when a tornado destroyed her home in Hendersonville, Tennessee, eight years earlier. Although her sons survived with little to no injury, Amy sustained a concussion, brain damage and a spinal cord injury.
“I’m not able to do so many things I used to be able to do,” she said at the time. “I want to still be the mom that I was before.”
At the time of her appearance, Amy explained that she needed another surgery to replace the screws in her back, which would re-stabilize her spine and reduce the pain that she was experiencing daily. The Doctors sent her to orthopedic spine surgeon Dr. Hooman Melamed for a free consultation. Dr. Melamed then agreed to perform the necessary procedure to help Amy regain her mobility.
