Freerunning
If you're looking for a great workout, or just a new, fun way to move through your environment, freerunning may be for you. Freerunning is a total body workout that combines stunts, gymnastics and intense cardiovascular training. The urban acrobatics transforms city streets into a personal playground. An hour of the activity can burn up to 700 calories!


"It's a lot of fun training, a lot of playing and just being creative with yourself and movement and looking for a good workout," says Team Tempest member Paul Darnell.

Paul says that while the acrobatics look dangerous, he hasn't suffered any serious injuries. "Usually the injuries that you pick up from freerunning, if any, are sprained ankles, bruises, scrapes and bumps," he says. "Freerunning is actually good for everybody. It just starts at a different level and you work your way up.

"[It's for] all shapes, sizes and genders," Paul says. "Freerunning is the art of movement, learning how to move through your environment."

Roller Derby
Roller derby is an intimidating sport. Its players skate around a track at high speeds, knocking each other down and racing to the finish. But it's also a great way to build muscle strength, agility and coordination while burning big-time calories! An hour of roller derby can burn between 400 and 1,000 calories.

"It's not just a workout," says Deborah Monterossa of the O.C. Roller Girls. "It is absolutely a full-blown lifestyle. I think going to the gym can be a lonely experience. You start thinking about yourself too much and how you look. In roller derby, there's so much camaraderie. There's a place for women of every size, and we can teach you how to skate."

OB/GYN Dr. Lisa Masterson, also known by her roller name "GYNOmite," goes for a spin with the O.C. Roller Girls, and has a blast!

"That was so, so much fun," Dr. Lisa says. "It takes you back to when you were a kid roller skating up and down your grandma's driveway, and then you get a little bit on your wild side. I was Gynomiting and just feeling it!


"But the best part was the ladies," she continues. "The ladies were fantastic; they were just so much fun and nice. The sportswomanship that they had was great."
