Hysterectomies May Increase Libido
A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of a woman’s uterus and ovaries, which is often necessary for women who suffer from uterine fibroids, cancer, abnormal bleeding and endometriosis. Many women fear hysterectomies because the procedure is sometimes associated with negative side effects, such as hormonal imbalance and decreased sex drive. The positive news, however, is that new research shows hysterectomies may actually improve libido.
A study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association monitored the post-operative sexual function of more than 1,000 women between the ages of 35 and 49 who had received hysterectomies. The 2-year study found a significant increase in sexual frequency and satisfaction in the test subjects. In addition, it marked a dramatic drop in women who experienced pain during intercourse.
Hysterectomy patients have also been shown to respond better to hormone replacement therapy. This form of treatment may negate the need for a hysterectomy, but it is often needed in combination with a hysterectomy for certain women as they approach and enter menopause.
OB-GYN Dr. Lisa Masterson explains how and why a hysterectomy is performed, and whether it’s better to undergo a robotic hysterectomy rather than a laparoscopic or vaginal hysterectomy.
