Plastic surgeon Dr. Andrew Ordon explains how more than moderate alcohol consumption can have negative impacts on your skin’s elasticity and appearance.

Diabetic Neuropathy Dangers
Headlines were made when a 61-year-old diabetic man awoke to a grim discovery -- his own dog had chewed off several of his toes along with part of his foot. The man suffered from neuropathy, or nerve damage, which had eliminated all sense of feeling in his foot.

“It brings up an important issue about diabetes,” OB/GYN Dr. Lisa Masterson says. “A lot of times the nerves can be damaged as well as the blood supply, so foot care is really important for diabetics. They can lose legs and limbs because of diabetes.

“A lot of people think if [they] get diabetes, [then they] can just take a pill and it will all be better, but there a lot of other consequences to [diabetes].”

Erasing Superficial Spider Veins
Dana has prominent spider veins on her feet and is self-conscious about wearing open-toed shoes. Dr. Ordon explains how specialized concealers, designed to mask bluish tones, can be applied to the feet for a temporary fix. For more definitive results, plastic surgeon Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian demonstrates how foam sclerotherapy injections will collapse spider veins instantly.

“These are veins that we actually don’t need,” Dr. Karamanoukian explains. “Within a few minutes, the veins will reappear but they’ll be eliminated for good as the body absorbs them. [The number of treatments] just depends on how many spider veins you have because not everyone is the same. Someone could have one versus a whole network of them,” Dr. Karamanoukian adds.
