Mayim Bialik’s Parenting Views
Mayim Bialik may be a successful actress with a Ph.D. in neuroscience, but according to her, her biggest job is being a mom.
"Being a mother is the toughest and most rewarding job I have,” Mayim says. “It’s hard because it humbles you and it’s like giving birth to a new you. There’s no script, there’s no text book.”
Mayim recently wrote the book Beyond the Sling to share her experiences and views on attachment parenting.
“I don’t like to think of it as a parenting book because I’m not a pediatrician or a therapist,” Mayim says. “I speak for a type of parenting. I look at the book more as what works for us.”
Mayim was recently the center of controversy when a photo of her feeding her 3-and-a-half-year-old was made public.
“A lot of people do breastfeed past 6 months,” Mayim says. “There’s nothing wrong with breastfeeding a toddler as long as it’s mutually desirable.
“Both of our children did not eat any solids until they were well past a year old,” she continues. “Children can be raised on breast milk. It is the perfect food and I know people who’ve breastfed well into the second year.
“There are a lot of people who don’t want to breastfeed toddlers, which I totally get. But there is no scientific evidence that breastfeeding a toddler makes them whiny, needy or manipulative.”
“Kids who get their needs attended to when they’re young tend to grow up more independent,” pediatrician Dr. Jim Sears adds.
Mayim says there’s no specific manual for parenting and that it’s all about reading the signals your baby gives you.
