Do you ever look in the mirror and dislike what you see? Do you sometimes wish you could wake up and not only look good, but feel good, too? The Doctors have five ways to help you get a better body, inside and out!


No. 5: Shrink Your Stomach

West Covina, California asks The Doctors how she can achieve a smaller stomach in time for bathing suit season. Dr. Travis explains that the stomach is the organ inside your body and is the first stop for food, while the abdomen is the area you see on the outside. “You can shrink your stomach with surgeries,” Dr. Travis says. “The stomach is like a rubber band. When you eat a meal, it expands, and after that meal goes through your stomach, it contracts. And it’s doing this after every meal.

“There’s such a thing called lap-band surgery, where they actually put a band around the stomach, which limits how far it can expand, so you can’t eat as much food.” he adds. “The idea is that you don’t eat as much, you lose weight.”

To shrink your abdomen, surgery isn’t the only answer. Reducing your caloric intake while increasing your exercise will help, as will drinking water before and during meals, which helps you feel full. Eating bulky foods such as salads, soups, fruits and vegetables will also make you feel full quickly and for a longer period of time.

“And if you decrease your portions, your stomach will feel as full with less food in it,” Dr. Ordon says. “That’s the key thing. When I try to diet, I feel that as I’m doing it over a course of a few weeks, my stomach doesn’t take as much to feel full.”


No. 4: Repair Facial Damage

Do you have unsightly scars, wrinkles or sun damage on your face? Dr. Ordon has a way to fix your facial damage.

Years of being out in the sun without wearing sunscreen caused damage to 37-year-old Julie’s face. She wants to rid herself of the brown spots and wrinkles around her eyes and forehead. Dr. Ordon treats her with Cynosure’s Affirm, a non-invasive facial rejuvenation machine that uses a unique laser with dual wavelengths to help tighten and exfoliate the skin while bringing imperfections to the surface. The laser reduces wrinkles and scars, treats pigmentation and redness, and is virtually painless!

While her face is red immediately after the procedure, Dr. Ordon explains that it will look clearer and younger in a few days. He tells Julie that for the best results she should have a couple more treatments.


No. 3: Eliminate Varicose Veins

Kim, 40, from San Diego, California has varicose veins on the back of her left leg. “To see this bulging, disfigured calf, it really has impacted my self-confidence,” she says in a video segment. “I used to think that my legs were one of my better features, and now I don’t like to look at them, I don’t like other people to look at them. I don’t even remember the last time I put on a skirt.”

 

Veins are blood vessels that return deoxygenated blood to the heart. Valves help the blood flow, and when they become damaged, unsightly and sometimes painful varicose veins occur. But a new non-surgical laser treatment gets rid of varicose veins once and for all!

 

Vein specialist Dr. Margaret O’Byrne passes a CoolTouch CTEV laser through Kim’s vein, destroying the inside lining and leaving just a thin cord of scar tissue in place of the vein. No visible scaring or bruising occurs on the leg since the entry point is extremely small. “So she takes these veins out of circulation,” Dr. Ordon says.

 

Kim reveals her smooth, varicose vein-free legs on the show by wearing a skirt. “The procedure was virtually painless,” she says. “It was easy, and I’m just delighted at how fabulous my legs look!”


No. 2: Get Your Body Baby Ready   

Rebecca, 34, wants to get pregnant but feels she lives too unhealthy a lifestyle to support a healthy pregnancy. She smokes up to a pack of cigarettes a day, eats fast food and is out of shape. She wants to know how to make her body ready to carry a baby, and stop her unhealthy ways. “All I have ever wanted is to be a mother,” she says. “The clock is ticking, and it’s louder than it has been before. I’m ready to have a baby, but my body’s not.

Before you get pregnant, follow Dr. Lisa’s checklist for getting your body baby ready.

1.
Quit smoking, limit alcohol consumption.

2. Start taking a folic acid supplement, which can be found in most prenatal vitamins.
    • Every woman of childbearing age needs to get 4 mg daily.

3. Stop oral birth control three months before trying to get pregnant.

4. See your doctor
• Give your doctor a rundown of family heath history
    
Get tested for STDs, anemia, hepatitis
Get up to date on vaccines

5. Avoid Aspirin and ibuprofen

Stop changing cat litter
• Dr. Lisa blogs about cats and pregnancy.

7.
Switch from aerosol cleaning products to “pump” products; Go green and non-toxic whenever possible.

“I’m not motivated,” she continues. “I should be. I mean what better motivation is there than to have a baby?”

Dr. Lisa sits down with Rebecca and explains how her current lifestyle can hurt her baby, and what she needs for a baby-ready body. Since a baby begins developing 17 days after conception, it is important to start living a healthy lifestyle before you decide to become pregnant. “You’re responsible for your baby’s health, inside and outside,” Dr. Lisa tells Rebecca. “So you’ve got to change that, and I think you’re ready to make that change.”

 

Using the Masimo Rad-57 Pulse CO-Oximeter, Dr. Lisa measures the amount of carbon monoxide in Rebecca’s blood. Dr. Lisa shows Rebecca that her carbon monoxide levels are high from smoking. The carbon monoxide will affect her baby if she does not quit smoking, potentially causing cerebral palsy, mental disabilities, deformities and even death.

 

Rebecca has three cats, which Dr. Lisa explains could put the baby at risk, as well. Cats can excrete toxoplasma gondii through their feces, which causes a disease called toxoplasmosis. A baby with toxoplasmosis can be born with birth defects. “You can actually be screened for this,” Dr. Lisa says.

Rebecca’s unhealthy diet can also harm the baby. Dr. Lisa explains that eating foods high in folic acid and getting enough calcium are vital when pregnant. “What you eat directly affects what happens to the baby,” Dr. Lisa says.

 

“But the smoking’s got to stop,” Dr. Lisa continues, “because you don’t want to have a miscarriage, you don’t want to have a stillbirth, you don’t want to have a baby that’s born dead. You don’t want to have a baby that’s born with any kind of deficits or disorders mentally, and you also don’t want to put yourself at risk for bleeding problems and things like that. You’re going to tackle this!

 

“You can do this. You can change your lifestyle,” Dr. Lisa adds.

No matter what you do to the outside of your body, one of the most important things you can do is keep the inside healthy, and that means improving your resting heart rate. Dr. Travis gives that chal lenge to three fans of The Doctors who are ready to make a change.

 

Lili, 28; Annie, 34; and Sheila, 46 join Dr. Travis for a week of hiking, with the task of focusing on lowering their resting heart rates, which would be an improvement to their overall health. “I’ve never, ever worked out in my life, and I’m mortified looking at that hill, mountain, whatever you want to call it!” Annie says as she begins her first hike.

 

At the end of the week, all three find it easier to climb the hill and feel better after reaching the top than the beginning of the week. “The whole point of this is that for a certain level of exertion, if your heart rate is lower, it means your heart is working less. It means you are in better shape,” Dr. Travis explains.

 

Dr. Travis measures their resting heart rates after the final day of climbing the hill, and compares them to their rates after the first day, and all three exhibit lower heart rates! Lili lowers hers by three beats per minute, Sheila by seven beats per minute and Annie by 11, and the three women lost a combined 10 pounds, as well!
