Breastfeeding in public

I got kind of pumped up once the topic of breastfeeding in public came up. There were some people, even women, who are so against breastfeeding in public it makes me sick. I have breastfed all of my children. My oldest are a set of twins who are 11 years old. I was only 17 when I had them and was very discouraged from many people to breastfeed. I decided to breastfeed them. I was one of the more modest women out there where I would find a private space while out in public. But when both were hungry, I would feed them both. I was very put down by my then-husband about breastfeeding so I quit at 6 1/2 months. I now have a 7 month old son and am still breastfeeding him. I have not decided when to quit. I figure he and I will make that decision when the time comes. He has refused the bottle and only wants his mommy which is fine with me. It is such an awesome thing to be able to do. My fiance is 125% supportive of me on this decision. In fact, when I was still pregnant, he did a lot of research on the next closest thing to breast milk just in case something happened to me and he had to take care of our son on his own. I think there's a society "norm" for quiting at around 6 months and anything over that is gross. The United States is actually the country with one of the lowest time for breastfeeding. Everywhere else, even Europe, is up in the 3 years or so. Whereas, the US is about 8 months. I would like to see people actually follow the American Academy of Pediatrics suggestion of breastfeeding for the first full year and seeing the benefits of doing so longer.created on: 02/25/10
