Baby Acid Reflux

I never knew how hard it would be to be a mom to a child with medical issues....

One of my twins about a week after we came back from the hosptal started screaming after eating, screaming when she woke up, and clawing at her face during feeding and after feeding. So much so that she would constanty scratch her face....

It took many trips to our local childrens hospta where we were told many times that it was just "colic". I had nannied for over 5 years before having my own children and i knew what colic looked like and knew that her "fits" as we termd them were not just colic.

Shortly after canada day she was reducing the amount of formula. She would eat 8oz at one sitting, and then on canad day she went to eating 8oz ALL DAY!  finally after another stressfull visit to childrens we got a good dr after having to tell off one of the ER dr's.

This new doctor sugested changing to an hypoalergenic formula. it took us trying 4 diffrent types they had at the hosptal. They thought nothing was wrong with her becouse she was gaining weight, and was a very helthy LOOKING baby. They finally took me seriously when I brought in a video recording of her having a "fit" on my digital camrea.

we started on the new formula, but she woudent take the ready to serve. that is all they sold here in canada. SO we ended up having to go to the states to get her formula. Between her formula and her medications (that are partialy coverd) we spend about $400 a month on just this one babys formula alone!

Since she was assocating pain with eating it took us awhile to get her intake up. it still isent up to where she should be,and her twin sister who was smaller then her is now a half pound larger then her. We also had to go out and try all diffrent bottles as she refused the ones that she was orignaly using.

Now we are seeing a peds GI dr, and she is on Nexium. Its helping, but now she is having more bad days then good, so it looks like we will have to have her medications upped.

She also had a scope done about 3 weeks ago, and visualy looks good so we know the Nexium is working. We are waiting back on the samples they took as they are concerd she may have something else.

All i can say is that acid reflux in babies does exist. And if you think something is wrong with your child dont stop untill someone takes you seriously. You know your child better then anyone else.

Twinmom08....was there a biological reason you did not breastfeed? Mothers milk provides the proper nutrition and digestability appropriate for baby. I wonder if that would have made the difference?

My son had the formula battle himself. I never produced milk, so I had to formula feed my son. He'd get fussy and fidgety with every feeding. We also took a few trips to the doctor before being told it was nothing to worry about. The dr assured us it wasn't acid reflux, like I thought. We changed formula countless times before finding one that worked. He ended up taking nutramigen. After a few days of being on that his fussiness cleared right up. He wasn't nearly as gassy as before either. I'm glad it wasn't anything more serious. I do hope that your daughter gets better. I wish you the best of luck in finding something that will work for her !

innervoice, i tried brestfeeding. Both girls were born with a very poor latch, and wernt getting enough. we had them weighed before and after feeds. I did pump for over 6 weeks till i got a sever tripple infection (throat, eats, and sinus) and the antibiotic could cause tummy issues. I had to suplment with formula and even on medication to bring in my milk i did not even have enough for one. And that was with pumping ever 2 hours around the clock.

The doctors at childrens, and the ped, and our GP even said that nothing would have changed if i brest feed exclusivly.

Also i suffer from PCOS and women with that condition usualy have a lack of milk

Thank you so much for all your advice. It is very appreciated. We are having a baby shower tomorrow and I am so excited. My mother in law has worked so hard planning this shower and I am so thankful for all she has done. We are so supported by family and friends thank goodness. Everyone tells me I need to put the babies on a very strict schedule but I think like you with the feeding I will try to feed every three hours but also in between. It is going to be such a life changing event for sure. I have a friend with twin boys and they also had feeding issues and had to have different formulas. Hopefully we don't have that issue but both my other children did so we will see. Good advice about the bottles I will definately wait to open them until we know what they prefer. I never thought about that. Funny how you forget all these little things when it has been so long.

Thanks again and keep in touch!

I KNOW HOW U FEEL. MY 5 YEAROLD SON STARTED TROWING UP VIOLENTLY SINCE JANUARY 2009, TOOK HIM SO MANY TIMES TO DOCTORS THEY ALWAYS TOLD ME NOTHING WRONG HE WAS GAGGING IN HIS MUCUS SO THAT MADE HIM VOMIT. I KNOW MY SON AND I KNEW SOMETHING WAS WRONG , HE WAS VOMITING EVERY OTHER DAY ON A GOOD WEEK , EVERYDAY ON BAD WEEK , ALWAYS VERY DARK , HE LOST 6 POUNDS, THEN LAST AUGUST AFTER A BAD EPISODE WE TOOK HIM TO DOC AGAIN AND I TOLD THEM NOT TO TELL ME THE SAME THING TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT CAUSE I WAS  NOT JOKING, THEY TESTED HIM FOUND OUT HE WAS VERY ANEMIC , WENT TO ER, THEN HOSPITAL , HE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH GERD (SEVERE ACID REFLUX) AND BECAUSE HE WAS VOMITING FOR SO LONG HIS ESOPHAGUS WAS SEVERE DAMAGED, HE WAS POUT ON PREVACID AND CARAFATE AND IRON, BUT WILL HAVE FUNDOPLICATION  NEXT THURSDAY CAUSE THE ACID REFLUX STILL SEVERE AND BECAUSE HE DEVELPOED HIATAL HERNIA HE CAN DIE OF SUFOCATION.  DOCTORS WENT TO SCHOOL BUT THEY  DONT LIVE WITH OUR KIDS , WE KNOW WHEN SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT, SO FIGHT FOR YOUR KIDS UNTIL U GET SOMETHING DONE. I HOPE EVERYTHING GOES OK WITH U. I'M KINDA VERY STRESSED FOR THIS SURGERY.
