Help!!! Yoga?

Hey all I need your help please,

I had written this once but I don't think it took, so I'm trying again.  As I told you in my last post I'm going to Florida to see my family this summer.  My mom has taken up Yoga and said she was very excited to take me with her to her Yoga classes.  I know nothing about Yoga, other than what we see snippets of on TV.  I don't want to embaras my mother or myself for that matter, so I was hoping you all could tell me what I need to know about Yoga and what to expect. :0)  Do I need to buy Yoga pants, or a certain outfit?  Do I need to start doing something now before I go?  Is there a Yoga code, or Yoga ettique I need to be aware of?  DO I need to buy a yoga video?  Is it hard?  I'm sure there are other questions I should be asking, but I don't even know enough to know what to ask. LOL  Any suggestions or advice you could give me would be appreciated. :0)

Hi Michele,

To answer your questions,  I'd start now because you willl be very sore if you start it out there with your mom and it wont make the trip as fun (IMO the first couple times I was sore; can't do it anymore but when I did).   Justt wear something comfortable and stretchable.  I preferred spandex with a long t-shirt.  But that was me. There is no code or ettiquete that I know of.  You just follow the instructor.  I've botten a mat and a yoga ball and a tape to start out.  I never could afford classes so I have a video for beginners.  For ME, it was hard at first because it really works you muscles and streches them in ways that at FIRST hurt unless you are limber to begin with.  It's not hard when you do it everyday.  Just takes getting used to.

I don't take classes but I do it on my own, and it cna be challenging, but the whole point of it is to be in touch with yourself, and your mind and body. You're supposed to go into it open minded, with no expectations. You try the poses, but don't push yourself to hard, or compare yourself to others. The whole point of it, is to try it out and to be calm and relaxed. Some of the poses are difficult, but I imagine the atmosphere of a class would be very relaxed and non-judgemental.

Oh, Thank you both Melissa and Namaste,

I could use all the advice I can get on this topic.  I have an excercise mat, blue rubber type stuff I can take with me, I have a ball but it's too big to travel with.  I guess I should try to do some stretching at least for now, I'm limber in some directions, I can put my foot on my head, but I don't bend backward too well,  when I did PT they told me I can hyper-extend in one direction, but have very little movement in the other.  Maybe I should google some yoga positions?  My mom said it was laid back and that I would like it, I just don't know anything about it.  I have some loose fitting excercise/jogging pants, I think they still fit, I have lost quite a bit of weight and big T-shirts are easy, so I guess that is ok?  You all are really helping me out.  Thanks, Michele

Hey,

Nope don't take yoga.  I am not Gumbie (remember the little green stretchy man?) and it stretches my body in ways it wont return from.  I have heard it is great for relaxation, meditating. Yoga is not good or so my neck/sping specialist told me, for people with any kind of disc diseases.

My son and daughter in law have the new wii exercise game and say its loads of fun.  I may have to empty out the piggy bank!

You're young!  If your mom can do it and enjoys it, then you gotta give it a try.  Let us all know how that goes.

hello sleep tech. i read ur blog about ur hesitation on yoga.  i have practiced yoga for a while now.  i started with a small private class by my indian friend. so i was confident.  i don't do the gym yoga classes coz they don't really do not conform to each person's condition. if u are totally fit, i think that would be ok.  but try to research on the different types of yoga & choose the one that's rt 4 u.  not all yoga's the same.  i do it but bcoz of my medical condition there are certain poses that my doctor does not want me to do coz it will aggravate it.  that's why i don't do gym yoga.  u can also try renting tapes on yoga for beginners & watch it 1st before u decide if u want 2 those poses.  just remember that the most important thing is to make sure ur body is relaxed & don't push it as ur just starting & most important is to breathe during the poses.

hope whatever u decide 2 do about this, it's bcoz u want it & not bcoz u want 2 please other people, even ur mom. you probably could tell her that u want 2 watch their class 1st b4 deciding 2 try it. what do u think?  let me know...

I started with a beginners yoga video. I did that every morning and got used to the regular poses. I recommend a beginners class if you take a class at a yoga studio (I dont' receommend agym class if you are a newbie). It can be a little intimidating because they talk about the names of the poses and you have to spend all your time looking at the instructor trying to figure out how to pose. But if it's a yoga studio (not a gym class) and a beginners class they are always really nice and really helpful.

I tried it after I had my son. Let's just say that's NOT the time to start. It was hard for me. You should start stretching NOW. I hope that you like it. Here's to the downward dog!!!!

You go girl!

Hello Michele,

a friend has bought me a book on Yoga for Health by Richard Hittleman, few of the stance can be challenging but anyone can do it ! It's fun and our body will appreciate it.

stretching is great for our  joints; it becomes uneasy for me if I miss doing it which i do ! hmm. one of the favorite is shoulder stand which I usually do the very last.

by the way, the doctor diagnosed one of my daughter to have Insomia. Two weeks ago I went and bought Gaba and Magnesium. Nowadays, she is sleeping six hrs each night as suppose to her usual 2 hrs. The problem with taking the sleeping tablet is that it stays in the system for awhile? Until today we are still figuring out when is the best time to take it without her missing a school.

Regard's to you and  your family.

Adela
