What the heck is ...

... Phenylethylamine (PEA)?  Phenylethylamine (fen-il-ETH-il-a-mean) is a naturally occurring alkaloid chemical compound made from the amino acid phenylalanine and linked to energy, mood, and attention.  Phenylethylamine may work in the human brain as a neurotransmitter that hep send and receive signals in the brain.  Phenlethylamine is a natural stimulant present in plants, animal and humans.  In 1999, the National Research Council of Canada  reported that the Phenylethylamine in Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (Blue-Green Algae) at a level of 0.15% (1.5mg/g) dry weight of algal cells,  Chocolate contains less than 10% of the amount of Phenylethamine found in microalgae.  Cheddar cheese is thought to contain the same amount of Phenylethamine as microalgae.

Research has shown that PEA help increase mental power - making it easier to learn, to memorize and form memories, to make rapid decisions, and to think faster.  Depressed people have lower levels of PEA.  In one study, supplementation with PEA at 10-60mg daily decreased the symptoms of depression in participants by 60%.  In another study, it was found that PEA levels may increase in the brain by oral intake of PEA and may alleviate subclinical symptoms of depresseion.  This phenomenon would mean an elevation of mood and thus an increased quality of life.  Researchers have also found that moderate aerobic exercise increases PEA levels in the human body.  Because the chemical is similar in some ways to amphetamines, researchers speculate that Phenylethylamine may play a role in a "runners high" experienced and reported by athletes.  PEA is often included in weight-loss supplements because of its appetite-suppressant properties.

To summarize, the compound Phenylethylamine exists naturally in the human central nervous system and is responsible for feelings associated with pleasure, and mental awareness.  PEA supports mental energy, mental clarity, concentration, attention, and is a natural mood enhancer.  Aphanizomenon flos-aquae contains reasonable amounts of PEA, one of the many nutrients found in AFA that help keep all the body functions very active and healthy.*
