Jan 1 2010 I started treatment with medical  marijuana, It has Openned doors that I had Put Out of my mind!

Marijuana was legal until some control freaks made it illegal in 1937.  Remember this is the same government that made alcohol illegal.  Marijuana has been used for centuries in medicine.  I have included a url to a web site with a timeline.  Coca leaf is used in the Andes to alleviate altitude sickness; it used to be in Coca Cola.  American Indians have used peyote for centuries, which is where the basis of the visions that have become the foundation of their beliefs.  These are all plants that have existed on earth for a millennium, used by people for thousands of years.  For those who believe in creationism, these plants were put on earth for a reason, not to be regulated. It is scary how a few fanatics; years ago convinced generations of people that marijuana is the devils weed. 

I live in a state where medical marijuana is legal and I am looking to try it for pain control.  I smoked marijuana in my 20's and believe me it is safer that alcohol.  I quit when for work.  It has no major side effects like most prescription drugs.  I have tried several drugs for my medical problems and half had side effects so bad that I had to quit taking them. 

If marijuana helps children, it is sure a lot safer than most of the drugs that they are given.  We have formaldehyde in our carpets and furniture; we use chemicals like Scotch Guard, use chemicals to clean our homes etc. We use plastics that leach into what is put in it.  We also have so many chemicals in our food supply including antibiotics and hormones given to animals that we ingest on a daily basis, yet marijuana scares you? It isn’t better living through chemicals!

Why dont you try doing a little research before you judge marijuana?? Marijuana is actually a great medicine...if it wasnt why would prescription drugs like Marinol exist?? The only reason that marijuana is illegal is because of racist laws. Try watching the documentary The Union there they talk to a man with Multiple Sclerosis and you can see the difference medical marijuana made in his life and the lives of many others. It just gets me angry when people dont research facts and just jump to conclusions when all they heard all their lives is false!! Please for yourself and for your children research carefully.

Anyone that says marijuana does not have a medical use is being very closed mind.   Any drug can be abused and many legal drugs are abused.    That does not mean they are not benifical when used correctly.   It appears marijuana has helped this young boy and his family to cope with his medial illness.   I find it refreshing that new ground might have been found in treating autism. It is clear his previous treatment was not working.  

Dear Allie, I have a son, 18, who was diagnosed with Aspergers at the age of eight.  He is verbal.  I didn't see todays show so I can't comment on that.  However, i agree with every thing you said.  You have had a long road and you have far to go.  You sound like an intelligent, educated woman.  Anyone who would recommend an illegal substance be used to treat autism is a fool.  There is a reason marijuana is illegal.  Since we don't know what causes autism, I feel it is more important to find the cause than to start playing around with non medical solutions.  People who do not have a child with this awful condition should not comment on any solutions.  Please continue to blog about this subject because it is so important that people get educated.  Bobbie

GET THE FACT BEFORE YOU WRITE MEDICAL MARIJUANA OFF  IT HELPS STAGNATE CANCER SO WE SHOULD BE HAPPY

No one is suggesting that children be given marijuana all the time to smoke up with. This segment was supposed to educate us on what is being done to help autistic children. No one is forcing it on anyone. It, just like many decisions you’re forced to make when you’re in this situation is a VERY personal choice. It is up to the family &  the doctors involved to come together to make an educated decision on what the correct choice would be.

There are literally thousands of people who will tell you that medical marijuana has saved their life or the life of a loved one. No one is suggesting that these children sit around in a group & get high. It’s just like taking a medication. Unfortunately, marijuana comes with a stigma. In doing the research it’s easy to see that marijuana is safer than alcohol & smoking & was only made illegal for government reasons. Marijuana comes with A LOT less side effects than many other drugs. OF COURSE it is unconventional to think about children having marijuana in their system, because we view it as a terrible drug that ruins lives. But, if you were to look at many of the other medications you would see that those chemicals would be hugely detrimental if used in excess, but when used in moderation (like was suggested with the marijuana today) they’re EXTREMELY helpful. The key is moderation- just like with every other drug. When chemotherapy first arose who thought putting radiation through a person's body would be helpful? And look how that turned out. Obviously, these are different situations, but if we do not keep the door opened for research we will never break any more ground in science or medicine.

The Doctors explicitly stated today that they were happy to see a turnaround in the child, but they need more information to say that they recommended this treatment. No one knows what causes or “cures” autism. This is a field where there is so much to be learned, no one should be shutting the door on possible research that can help.
