The reason why America is in trouble is because we have forgotten how to read the labels.  Most of our parents didn't train us to eat healthy or read labels. 

We don't need to eat the low fat, no fat foods.... remember folks there are fillers in there that ultimately are just going to make you fatter.  Our body still needs fat. We just need to be smarter about our choices.

#1 Look at Sugars

#2 Look at Sodium

#3 Fats 

#4 Carbohydrates

#5 Keep a Journal of foods, calories, etc.  Also take down your weight, and exercise for that day.  Do this EVERYDAY For example a woman my height 5'8" should be on average 146 lbs. this means i should have no more than 2,000 calories a day.   So break everything down and have 6 MEALS, yes 6 meals a day.  3 meals are your avg -- breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.  breakfast being the largest meal of the day will keep you from snacking at work. However if you do snack at work select something smarter like whole wheat toast with a natural cranberry sauce or a yogurt.   Smarter choices equal healthier people.

ALSO look at the label ingredients if there is anything on there that doesn't translate to laymen english and sounds like some latin lab term put it down. Remember MONOsaturated is bad news!!

Utilize whole grains, green and colorful veggies in their raw or steamed state (to get the nutrients from the veggies do NOT boil). Whole grains can be great (whole wheat, whole honey wheat, whole grain, etc.) Select foods that are high in vitamin content.... Citris is fantastic in C vitamins, drink LOTS Of orange juice

I fear it will only get worse with most everyony living on a tighter budget. Your blog reminded of the fast food value meals. They are cheap but very unhealthy. Thanks for thoughts on the subject.

I just went to the store yesterday and guess what cereal was the best priced cerea you could ever get---Froot Loops.  A double sized box for $3.  With 27% extra froot loops inside.  It was so tempting to get (I have food stamps) to save money, but at what expense to my health?  I never got it.  Have in the past, but never again.  It's pure, flavored sugar.  Don't be fooled by the fiber they claim to have in it; it m ay be there but pls try to find fiber elsewhere.
