Hi, Melissa, I wasn't responding about the eating disorder but instead about the osteoporisis/osteopenia. Have you heard about Oprah and how her doctors told
her all her blood work was normal? She asked over and over for the results of a thyroid test. She kept being told it was
normal. It turned out no-one ever ran the test. She fired the
doctors and finally got real help. DO NOT rely on the words: your
levels are fine. Get your lab results. With your symptoms, I
would bet my life that you have not been checked for vitamin D or that you were checked and you are insufficient or deficient and no-one has effectively treated you for it. With you taking about 1,000 IU's a day (250% per your post) and getting about 500 IU's per day from milk and other food, your
D is still at least insufficient, and this is why you not only have osteopenia but why you have a sleep disorder and other symptoms. My sleep disorder
DISAPPEARED within les than 1 month of treatment for vitamin D deficiency. Just ask for your vitamin D level. 100 IU's raises your blood level by 1 ng/ml. I don't want to stress you all out. But if you really want to figure this out and you really want your life back, get your D blood level from your doctor and optimize your intake to get your levels up to an absolute minimum of 40 ng/ml. I'm keeping mine at 80-100 ng/ml for life. I am making NO MONEY this and am reaching out to people because I don't want anyone else to have to suffer like I did.
Larissalle, I no longer have an eating disorder...I eat and drink milk etc. I now have osteopenia. The vitamin I take is a combo of calcium, vit D, and vit K, which also enhances absorption. I've had blood levels of all nutrients within the past year and I was told everything was in the normal range. My nutrition now is much much better than when I was a teenager, along with vitamins.
Even with all that though--the playing outside, sunlight, milk every meal, as a kid, and continued exercise as an adult---I still got osteoporosis somehow, most likely because of poor nutrition.
Melissa, you need to know your blood level of vitamin D to know how much to take. 100 IU's raises the blood level 1 ng/ml. This is per THE top researcher in vitamin D, Dr. Michael F. Holick. A New England Journal of Medicine artcle by Dr. Holick is available on the web for free: http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/extract/357/3/266. Read it. Take it to your doctor. Or contact Dr. Holick yourself and tell him your condition and what he thinks; his email is mfholick@bu.edu. He is one of the nicest people in the world, and someone from his office will probably get back to you with information. Osteoporosis since 26 yrs old??? This screams of vitamin D deficiency. Regarding calcium, you should not be taking more than USRDA of 2,500 mg/day, and many sources recommend keeping levels at 1,000 mg/day. Pumping yourself full of calcium when you have low vitamin D levels will do NOTHING for you. You need a minimum of 32 ng/ml of vit D in your blood to be able to absorb the calcium you are ingesting. Talk to Dr. Holick or have your doctor contact him. This one contact will change your life. Take care.
